I spoke with Gary Gygax on the phone (creator of D&D)......
Edited on Sat Nov-03-07 09:33 AM by Flatline
I know this should be in the gaming forum maybe, but not a donor yet and I was so happy I had to post it =) Gary Gygax is the creator of Dungeons and Dragons

I was reading Gary Gygax's Wiki page and got to know more about him and noticed in there about his health not doing so well....so out of the blue I found his Home # and called him :woohoo: to thank him for creating a great game that kept me out of trouble as a kid and that his impact I feel set the pace for RPG's. He was the most cheerfully, happy go lucky person I have talked to in a while it was both an honor and a privilege to talk to him personally and thank him on behalf of all the D&D fans around the Globe.....it was a treat.

Just wanted to share that moment with ya.

1. We toasted him last night over dinner with my gaming group.
Apparently it was the official "Dungeons and Dragons" day worldwide or something?

His game is still making me happy at age 33...

2. That would be cool!
I remember many a sleepless night in my youth fighting orcs, dragons, evil necromancers, etc... Totally cool stuff!

3. His public persona many years ago was pretty egotistical...
...or was said to be so, anyway. In recent years, though, without any official status with the makers of the new D&D, he's reputed to be mighty cool in person.

4. Still a bit pissed at Gygax
Back in the early days(you know, the first three little paperback books of rules) my local D&D group put out a Xeroxed little newsletter, mainly to disseminate ideas and come up with new twists for the game. This was essentially circulated around my local high school, and sold at the local comic/game shop. Gygax and his lawyers came down on us hard for one issue, because we had come up with a monk character and somebody had forwarded that issue to him. He sent nasty letters threatening lawsuits, etc., all to shut down a bunch of dedicated, creative kids who loved the game. To add even more salt to the wound, a few months later the Dragon came out with a special article on a new character called The Monk, using rules and ideas that seemed very, very familiar. Worst yet, the monk character was included in further new editions of the rules, and we never got credit or compensation, since we didn't have the big bucks to hire a copyright lawyer and fight Gygax and TSR for years.

I still play the game, have for the past thirty plus years. But that whole incident soured me on Gygax and TSR.
