Hot Dawg! Ken Maynard AND Hoot Gibson! |
|
Together again. Two of my childhood Saturday-at-the-movies B-western shoot-em-up stars. All afternoon on TCM.
"Round up the boys and have 'em meet us at the pass." "We don't cotton to strangers drawin' on an unarmed man." (I guess that was OK as long as you weren't a 'stranger'.)
Raymond Hatton is the sidekick in the one I'm watching now, "Arizona Whirlwind". He started making movies in 1909. Usually a sidekick, but sometimes the star. When I was a kid I thought his name was Ray Manhatten. "Funny name for a cowboy", I thought. "I didn't know New York had cowboys."
The bad guy music when those no-good polecats were up to...well...NO GOOD! And the good guy music when the good guys were riding to the rescue. And the 'Uh Oh' music when somethin' real bad was about to happen to the good guys,
And all them purdy ladies who never seemed to go on to fame and fortune in Hollywood. Stuck in the Bs until their looks were gone. :-(
I need some popcorn.

2. I still remember one Hoot Gibson line from a movie: |
|
"A gentleman never passes up the chance to say, Thank you." I seem to remember that one from a movie on TV though.
There were other stars in MY Saturday line-up like the Durango Kid and Lash Larue and Johnny Mack Brown.

Well, I saw him anyway.
I was around 10 or 11 and riding the city bus in Birmingham out to the Alabama State Fair. Downtown I had to transfer to the bus to the fairgrounds. Two stops after I boarded the fairgrounds bus, Lash LaRue got on. In costume, with his bullwhip in hand. He was one of the grandstand acts.
At the time I thought it was really cool that I got to see him up close. Years later it dawned on me that he must have been at the end of his career. I mean no limo? Or even a cab to the gig? Poor bastid. Riding the damn bus. :-(
