I just found out that my step-grandpa is dying

Though my dad and stepmom have been married since I was 5, I've never been all that close to him. Despite that, I'm really sad tonight.

I'm really close to my stepmom and I know she's hurting right now, and I can't do anything about it. They're in Nebraska. I'm in California. I want nothing more than to be able to give her a huge hug right now. But I can't.

I feel helpless, sad, and...I don't even know what else.

It hasn't been a very good night. :(

99% of the time, I'm completely happy that I moved out here. And I know that if I still lived there, I'd be completely miserable.

I'm hardly ever homesick. And really, I wouldn't even call it that right now.

It's just that every time something happens, the only place I want to be is there, with them. I suppose that's entirely normal, it just really sucks.

I'm not good at helpless. At all.

But I do intend to call her tomorrow. And I'll insist that she call me whenever she needs to talk/vent/cry. But I know that if I was there, I could do so much more.

I actually looked into plane tickets today, and I plan on going back for the funeral if at all feasible, but in the meantime... :(

It's hard to leave the folks in the Midwest when we seek our fortune in the sun. My mom is in Wisconsin and I miss her so much, too.

Most of the time, I'm completely ok being, essentially, alone out here. But the second anyone in my family is sad, hurt, etc., the only place I want to be is there with them.

It's so difficult. I don't do helpless very well. :(
