Vikings fine WR for attending funeral
http://msn.foxsports.com/nfl/story/7426438?MSNHPHCP>1=10637

The team has informed wide receiver Troy Williamson that he will be docked one game's pay for missing three practices as well as last Sunday's game against San Diego in order to attend his grandmother's funeral.
Williamson stands to lose $25,588.24 of his $435,000 base salary, the Minneapolis Star-Tribune reported.

"It's really kind of out of my realm," coach Brad Childress said, according to the Star-Tribune. "It's a business principle, organizationally. If you don't show up, how does that work? We talked about that today."

Williamson, who returned to the team Wednesday, said he did not regret his decision to spend the time with his family.

1. That's bullshit.
Not saying that the loss of one game's pay will hurt him; most likely it won't.

But fining someone for missing practice/a game because they felt the needed to be at their grandmother's funeral is crap.

2. Cold hearted assholes
I used to be a Vikings fan but this is the last straw. I'd quit my job if someone did that to me; tell my boss where he can stick it.

3. Isn't that illegal?
I don't know if it's a state by state thing but I'm pretty sure you're legally allowed bereavement time off to attend a funeral.

5. I guess it depends on the specific terms of the contract he signed.
Contract employees are very different from all the rest of us.

4. My job gives time off for family funerals!
They'll give a week if it's out of town. My friend's mother just died, and they gave her a week to attend the funeral and take care of things.

7. :bzzzzzzzz:
Wrong answer.

Don't just say "he wasn't fined" and not elaborate.

12. If he were paid by the game, or practice, that might be true
But I'm pretty sure that an NFL contract is per season, or per year, and that players are paid a salary, not a wage.

13. Well, of course - Vikings don't do funerals. Once the body is dead, they're done with it.
To go to a funeral is to go against everything being a Viking stands for.
