I just watched "Cool Hand Luke" for the first time.
I really don't get it. I watched a guy repeatedly try to escape from prison (from which his sentence wasn't that long) with no discernible reason for doing so even after it was obvious that his attempts were going to end his life.

Help me understand the underlying message here. Was it perseverance? I feel a little empty.

1. Basically it's about a guy who refuses to accept authority, defeat, or
the mundane no matter what it costs him. He was put in prison for destroying parking meters as I recall, or something like that. It's just about how much of a boot the system really has on us, and those that choose to defy it often do so at a heavy price.

3. It's been a while for me, but here's my take
Cool Hand Luke is about the ultimate triumph of the human spirit, the last act of freedom and defiance in the face of oppressive authority. Sure, Luke was an asshole at times, and maybe he did deserve prison time for vandalism, but his was a spirit that was strong and competitive, whether it came to scarfing down eggs, sweating it out in "the box," or standing up to the Captain of the prison farm to which he's been sent.

6. Is he standing up to the man because he was locked in "the box"
unfairly? Otherwise, he deserved to be where he was.....

8. When Luke's mom died and they locked him the box?
"When a man's mother dies and, uh, he gets to thinking about her funeral and paying respects. Before he knows it, his mind ain't right. He's got rabbit in his blood and he runs."

That's alittle harsh.

24. I'm not a Michigan fan. OSU students must feel pretty bad about poking so much fun at MI and then..
losing to Illinois. Not even the students here thought we had a chance in that game

15. I don't necessarily think there was an underlying message
other than he was very anti-authoritarian and/ or defiant, even when it was not in his best interest.
