So how long can the human body stay awake?
I'm going on being up for 40 hours now. I found out my fiance is cheating on me, and even though I feel exhausted every time I lay down, my mind races so much I have to get up and do something. I keep waiting for my body to force me to sleep, but it's just not cooperating.

I WANT TO SLEEP! Is there anything wrong with that?

1. Have some warm milk and a turkey sandwich
Edited on Tue Nov-13-07 03:32 AM by Lydia Leftcoast
and then start reading a dull book. No music, no TV, just have your turkey and warm milk, and then lie in bed quietly.

When I had to fall asleep during the day once while working a night job one summer, I used to go to bed with a history of philosophy translated from German in 1870. I NEVER got through more than two pages before falling asleep.

Sorry about your fiancee, though. Few things hurt more than losing the future you had imagined.

2. Depends.
I had a coke dealer friend back in the day who would be awake for weeks at a time.

3. First off I'm sorry for that happening to you. It must be Hell.
Second I am a firm believer in better living through chemistry. If you don't have any prescription medications why not try some Tylenol PM?

Or maybe you can beat the crap out of him.

There's nothing like that kind of betrayal!

I was engaged with a woman who promised me that if we parted -- there would not be another person involved.

She forgot her promise & fucked a mutual friend (more than once).

This fucked me up for a very long time.

The very idea of another man entering her was impossible for me to overcome.

The only way for me to deal (although I tried to accept things as they were) was to draw a line in the dirt. She violated my faith in her -- she's out of my life now.

6. Been there, done that.
It's hell, and you will also lose ten pounds in, like, three days.

Honestly, if you really really want to get some sleep? Xanex. Not kidding. Do yourself a favor and find a friend with a totem pole and take half.

All-in-all, that makes a total of a little over 25 pounds that I've lost in the last 4 months :) due to stress. :(

7. I'm so sorry
I know how sucky insomnia is, especially with the mind racing.

My best friend just told me last night she is getting divorced for the same reason. Ugh!

Take care of yourself.

8. that sucks. Been there, sadly
I wish I could not say I have, and I am the same way - can't sleep or eat when I am stressed out like that. My record was about 57 hours - luckily I ran into a friend who also had not slept and we hung out and were slap-happy together.

By the way, you should start mildly hallucinating soon (waving walls, etc) which might help at least make it interesting.

10. No there isn't. Get Drugs
If you have healthcare, call your doctor, and they can prescribe you something.

If you dont' have a doctor, go to the drugstore and buy some nyquil or benydril.

13. I learned that the best way to fall sleep is to post a Loung thread
about how you can't fall asleep. lol. Anyway, I passed out for about 3 or 4 hours soon after I posted, and I feel a little better now.

12. Sorry for what you're going through....
I've VERY recently (as in last week) been through much of the same thing. I am still having trouble getting to sleep, and while asleep I keep having dreams that are rather upsetting, but I'm taking one day at a time until I make my final decision about the fate of the relationship.

As for the sleep question... My last job required a weekend of what they termed "on call." A more accurate description would have been "60 hours of torture." From Saturday morning at 7 am until Monday morning at 7 am, you were responsible for everything. The official policy was that after 16 hours straight, you would call the supervisor and get relief for a time; however, in practice it never happened. Either the supervisor wouldn't answer the phone, or nobody would be available to relieve us. So, my personal record without sleep (other than maybe a 10 to 15 minute catnap or 2) is about 55 hours. By that time, you're straight up delirious and shouldn't be making any kind of decision, no matter how trivial.

Hope you get some sleep soon!

16. I've done a little over 72 hours before, and I don't recommend it. Get drugs!
There's nothing wrong with using sleep aids. That's what they're there for.

11 days listed as the longest time anyone has gone without sleep naturally. If you were to throw meth into the mix, I'm sure someone could go longer.

I used to have really bad insomnia, one time I was up for four days straight. Sleep aids are okay to use if you need them. I never liked Ambien because it gave me really bad side effects, but others I know that have used it have said that they didn't feel many side effects from it. Different people react to different drugs differently. I like Lunesta, but it's damn expensive if you don't have insurance. Atavax worked great for me. It's an anti-anxiety pill, and it makes you feel both good and tired. That stuff would always put me to sleep. Very mild side effects the next day, and only $25 dollars for a bottle of 30 of them, as opposed to almost $200 for the same amount of Lunesta.

20. Get some GABA
It's an amino acid and known to help 'quiet' the brain so you can fall asleep.

I have a busy brain and sometimes it keeps me up. 1000mg helps me get to sleep
