Play Free Rice!!
http://www.freerice.com/index.php

For every word you get right, 10 grains of rice are donated to and distributed by the United Nations World Food Program (WFP).

How does the FreeRice vocabulary program work?
FreeRice has a custom database containing thousands of words at varying degrees of difficulty. There are words appropriate for people just learning English and words that will challenge the most scholarly professors. In between are thousands of words for students, business people, homemakers, doctors, truck drivers, retired people… everyone!

FreeRice automatically adjusts to your level of vocabulary. It starts by giving you words at different levels of difficulty and then, based on how you do, assigns you an approximate starting level. You then determine a more exact level for yourself as you play. When you get a word wrong, you go to an easier level. When you get three words in a row right, you go to a harder level. This one-to-three ratio is best for keeping you at the “outer fringe” of your vocabulary, where learning can take place.

There are 50 levels in all, but it is rare for people to get above level 48. I'm hanging out around 40/41, but you wouldn't know it from my DU posting. :)

1. BBC
I heard about it through BBC World Service and thought of posting it. It's would be a great time waster for cube rats, while doing good.

I had a clever streak, making to level 43, before dumbness repulsed me back to 40.

2. Yep, that's what I am....
Cube-rat, currently bored. I had a good streak up to 45... those kind of "harder" words actually seem easier to me sometimes, as you can look at the latin/romance roots and pull out the meaning, while more obscure but "easier" words are more difficult to guess.

9. 45! 45!
A lot of them I'm guessing, but it's the Latin roots that are getting me through. Thank god for Latin!

10. Same for me, dude...
I've been doing moderately ok at guessing based on the latin roots, plus knowledge of French and German. I hit 47 once on a good run, but can't stay there...
