Musicians That Only Other Musicians Worship (for the most part) |
|
The thread on Townes Van Zandt inspired me.
Name some musicians / bands that most of the world doesn't know or care about, that other musicians speak about worshipfully ... that are really just ... okay, in your opinion.
mine: Jeff Buckley.
There, I said it.

Hubert Sumlin doesn't get appreciated nearly enough by most people I don't think. Seems like it's mostly the people he influenced that get attention.

20. One of the most amazing guitar players, ever!! |
|
I used to live in Washington, DC and had the pleasure of seeing Danny Gatton live a couple of times. What this guy could do with a guitar --- unbelievable!!
RIP, Danny...you are missed.

8. Doesn't get anywhere near the respect he deserves. |
|
Case in point: Back in the 70s, Rush comes up with the song Rivendell. Fast forward to 2000-2003, where Peter Jackson makes not one but three movies based on this song (the Lord of the Rings Trilogy). I have no problem with that, but I think he should have acknowledged Rush's song. In fact, he should have had them do the soundtrack!
But no, there's no mention of Peart's lyrics! WTF??!!?1!1!??

13. Check the release dates... |
|
Rush's Rivendell: February 1975 Styx's Lord of the Rings: September 1978
And a minor correction: At least one of us is a moran. And I think we've shown just who the morans are !
Uh, I mean, is!

17. My little brother idolizes him. |
|
He (my little brother, not Neil Peart :P) is 16 and has been playing drums since he was a little kid - we got him a drum set for his 12th birthday, and he's been adding on to it ever since. It's kind of a running joke/fight/argument between us - he claims that Neil Peart is the best drummer EVER in the history of the universe!!!11!1!!, and when I point out that Keith Moon came first (and, by Peart's own admission, was one of his influences), he gets mad. :P (Well, not really mad, but he doesn't particularly care for The Who - mostly because I like them a lot.) Personally, I don't really have anything against the man - it's just kind of fun to wind up my little brother.

5. Hubert Sumlin, Buzzy Linhart, Shawn Phillips |
|
King Pleasure, Lonnie Johnson, Stuff Smith, Chic Webb, and of course all his band alumni like Louis Jordon and Ella Fitzgerald, King Curtis, Lou Adler, and let's not forget one of the few guitarists who really made a difference, Mother Maybell Carter, oh hell I nearly forgot Son House, Sidney Bachet. Look them all up if you don't know who they are.

9. Liberty DeVito and Ritchie Canata |
|
I've heard (in the past) from two insider sources that Liberty DeVito is/was considered one of the best contemporary drummers, and that Ritchie Canata was the most versatile reed player on the rock/pop scene-- both from the same band, too.
I'll agree with the Canata opinion as he's about the only rock player I've heard that can double- and flutter tongue w/o it sounding like an effort. On the other hand, I don't know jack about percussion...

Who is supposedly a big name rock star, but I really don't see him much beyond a second-rate Hendrix imitator who half the songs he does are covers of other artist's songs.
