SPK Jr. Is Now...
Edited on Sat Nov-17-07 10:22 AM by Southpawkicker
a member of a paramilitary organization?

(no that's not him in the pic)

He's so excited, all he wants to do is wear his uniform.

I'm excited for him... at this point in time anyway.

Personally I had some bad experiences in scouts, their "anti gay" stance is offensive as hell, maybe they should look at weeding out pedophiles as well since I had a scoutmaster who was one of those. :grr:
I will be very careful and watchful of his scouting experiences...

:hi:

any other parents of members of Jr. Paramilitary Organizations?

1. As an administrator in an elementary school
we host a cub scout pack but quite frankly, the scout leaders are complete dolts! It doesn't mean your kid will have a bad experience though. I had good experiences in the scouts and my dad was an Eagle Scout.

3. Well just keep am eye on him
If he starts to comb his hair to one side, paint a little black mark under his nose and practices clicking his heels together and throwing his hand in the air.....
Then I would make him quit....

9. I was a scout leader when my son was younger
It was his deceision to quit due to their anti-gay and anti-atheist positions. I was willing to stay if he had wanted to, I liked the other cub scout leaders but the boy scout troop was too regimented and drove the kids to get badges instead of having fun and teaching about the outdoors.

I had a great time when I was a scout and still go hiking and camping with one friend I met back in those days.

10. I had a lot of fun in scouts too
learned a lot about camping, and the outdoors, had fun with other kids.

the pack, and then later the troop i belonged to were not religiously affiliated as so many scout groups are, or sponsored by them

but as i said, we ended up with a pedophile scout leader and that has left me with a bitter taste in my mouth about it all...

11. It'll be a good experience for him
I was in cub scouts and then boy scouts until I was 17.

My dad was the Scoutmaster. I missed Eagle Scout by 3 badges.

Managed to escape without being anti-gay or a fundy, as did all of my friends. And according to some, I ended up a "bad boy" anyhow.

We went camping somewhere one weekend every month, and 1 week in the summer.

I have fond memories...

20. i remember it well
out in canyonlands in southern utah

sitting on a rock in the middle of a clear star filled sky

smoked a bowl with some other guys

didn't think i felt anything

then i started looking at the rocks thinking they looked a little like people (statues) in the distance and suddenly, i knew i was high

yeah, we seem to have lived some parallel lives in some ways

12. I was one of these:

Although, I didn't look like this, either. It was a fairly good experience for me. I became a junior before I entered the richie school district that looked down on such "behavior" by girls (WTF?)

I loved singing kumbaya and making God's eyes. I also liked camping. It was fun! I hated selling cookies, though.

i liked singing that song, although i sang it at church or sunday school or something, don't remember it at scouts.

cookie selling blah

i remember selling things for boy scouts

SPK Jr. seems to like to go out and sell things

He likes to win the prizes for selling the most.

15. My son was in that exact paramilitary organization through Webelos II
He decided not to "bridge".

I was very glad, because that was when all the anti gay stuff started to really come out.

I think, in order for that organization to be good again, they need to stand up to the Mormon Church.

My daughter is now part of the Brownies. She loves it.

21. Ugh...
the mormon church

having grown up in Utah

my scout troop was the only non-mormon or non-sectarian troop in our area

the local scout organization didn't want to recognize it but they did

it had it's good points

and then it had its scoutmaster the pedophile

so

standing up to the mormon church, shouldn't be so hard

16. I'm an Eagle Scout and until the BSA changes its fundy ways, I'm done with them.
They invited Ann Freaking Coulter to speak a few years back. The group used to be about tolerance, leadership development and developing friendships. It may still be that way at the local level, but the BSA is WAY too fundy and right wing for me.

17. I'm happy for your son
And it's nice that he's excited about it.

I was a Boy Scout. I went through the whole thing...Cub Scouts, Webelos(sp?). I remember getting my Boy Scout uniform and my Boy Scouts Handbook. I remember learning the Boy Scout Oath. But I didn't last very long in the Scouts. I eventually quit...it just wasn't for me.

As a gay man, I deplore the Boy Scouts policy about excluding gay boys and men from the Scouts. I find it deeply offensive that one's sexual orientation is somehow not deemed "moral". That is a vile, despicable policy. And as long as they continue that policy, I will renounce my participation in that organization. Again, I'm happy for your son...but I can't justify their homophobic policy (which, I believe, is NOT shared by the Girl Scouts. I don't believe the Girl Scouts has a similar policy about excluding lesbians)

19. I also deplore the position of the boy scouts
and would be unsupportive of the organization totally if he weren't so into it at the moment.

if he starts thinking or is told something derogatory about gays, or starts saying sieg heil, i will take him out of that bigoted fascist organization

:grr:

I am sorry that they have that position
