I'll never understand why people are in such a hurry |
|
I heard the sirens a couple of hours ago. I hear them every day, since both a CDF fire station and the local ambulance garage are about a mile down the road. You get so you can tell how bad an accident is by the sounds of the electronic wails rushing past your house.
Two state highways intersect a few miles from here, regulated by traffic signals. Both roads are straight for a mile in all directions, providing excellent visibility at the crossroads in this rural area. I suppose that's an invitation for traffic at 65 mph to blow the light on either of the two-lane roads.
Someone apparently decided to do that at about 1:04 p.m. today. Now two people are dead, and I can't avoid thinking of a similar accident some five years ago. I was there as a news photographer, and let me tell you — dead seems a whole lot deader when you're looking right at it.
I'll never understand.

1. Oedipus Rex, I'm so sorry to read this |

We deal with the same kind of stuff. We live in a rural area, and speed limits are evidently just suggestions in this area. As a result, there have been some very ugly road rage incidents and accidents.
I wonder about those who just HAVE to get there 30 seconds sooner, too.
You need a hug. Julie

I'm never, ever gonna forget that day. The coroner hadn't arrived yet, so the bodies were still in their cars. Half an hour earlier, they were on their way to... somewhere.
And then, just. like. that.
I don't want to forget, though. Remembering seems safer.

3. One of the first things my ex, a police officer ever had to do |
|
was to come upon an accident that hadn't even been called in yet. It was pretty bad and there wasn't a thing he could do but wait for the coroner.
I feel for those of you who are exposed to such harsh realities.

4. My father found a couple of guys who had died when their motorcycle |

went through a guard rail.
He said he has never experienced a night so absolutely still and silent.
