Birdwatcher reports death threat after cat-killing trial

Associated Press

GALVESTON — Bad blood over the shooting of a feral cat has resulted in an alleged death threat against the birdwatcher who admitted pulling the trigger.

A judge declared a mistrial last week in the case of Jim Stevenson, the founder of the Galveston Ornithological Society. Prosecutors said they wouldn't retry Stevenson on charge of animal cruelty for the November 2006 cat shooting.

The prominent birdwatcher has since received an e-mail containing a death threat, said his attorney, Tad Nelson

"The e-mail said that Jim might very well end up in the sights of a. 22-caliber rifle but that, if he donated $10,000 from his bird fund into a fund for feral-cat rescue, he might avoid his fate," Nelson said.

3. So threatening murder is okay because of disagreement over pest control?
So where's the crime in what the birdwatcher guy did? Feral cats especially are not pets. They are a wild, invasive species and a menace to the local habitat. I mean does this guy own his own property or not? Is he allowed to control pests or not? Is he going to get jailed for popping squirrels next time? I hope not, my granddad does that all the time. Bird feed is expensive and there is never a shortage of rodents. I hope the flakey-earthy-crunchies don't haul me aware for killing mice in my house.

14. People can feel however they want.
If some people want to think pest control is cruel, that is their perogative. My problem, of course, is when people who were programmed by Disney movies as children to think of animals as people and any human intervention as murder start enforcing that delusion on the rest of us. Perhaps my attitude is a reaction to the Ingrid Newkirks of the world who would end all animal medical testing (which in practice would mean ending all medical testing) and funding criminal organizations like ALF to do it.

18. If you are supporting shooting invasive species, start with the MOSt invasive species
Without humans, those cats you hate so much wouldn't be there, after all the cats didn't get there without humans.

So, why aren't you coming out in support of killing humans? It's not changing the subject, it's pointing out the flaws in what apparently passes for "logic" on your part.

20. ??? What constitutes a 'pest' is defined by the animal's relation to humans.
Rats are a pest because they are harmful to us.

The question of overpopulation of humans is a different matter with a different set of goals and available options for controlling it. Frankly your suggestion that the solution must be the same for both is at once ridiculous and dangerous.

21. But you are referring to cats, not rats, and their relation to other wildlife, not humans
So why are YOU changing the subject?

9. It wasn't on his property, and the contention was that the cat was the pet of the
attendant (operator?) of the bridge the cat lived under...

12. I see. I was under the impression it was his yard.
Yeah the article said it was a pet of the bridge person, but also that it was among the strays. I guess I was giving the bird dude the benefit of the doubt on his perception of it.

13. Well, yeah, but so are the mice in my cellar...
...the rats in the city sewers and the staph infection I prevent evey time I wash.

I really like kitties, but it does not prevent feral cats from being pests.

15. Obviously, the scumbag hasn't matured beyond a childhood level.

The only time I ever even thought about hurting a cat was when one tried to kill a nesting dove that had been hanging around for a while. And I was nine or ten. I've since come to understand that it's part of the natural cycle.

Hope he coughs up the money or someone does pop him.

23. Non-native cats killing native birds is not part of a "natural cycle"

I'm glad he got a mistrial. Cats that are not pets kept on a leash or in a house are indiscriminate killers and should be eliminated.

22. Good for Jim on the mistrial

Cats that are not in a house or on a leash are little more than indiscriminate native bird killers.
