44. Oh
c'mon. Its one of the greatest twelve hours of cinema anyone ever sat through. Comedy disguised as satire and cowboy action with a healthy dab of feminism shot by cameramen on drugs directed by a drunk. A veritable Hackman tour de force. A masterpiece. Way ahead of its time. By decades.

when the little girl shot her Daddy, Lieutenant Dan, when she had the opportunity to turn him loose. Many mixed the awesome message there. That Hackman was really a charitable and giving kind. And another message mixed. Shouldn't a lawman's daughter be able to shoot better then that? She did keep the badge - more symbolism, but I don't have the time right now.

It's a much better cut IMHO. There's more to their relationship that was apparently too scandalous for our puritan eyes ;)

53. Here's some background:
LINK

There exists a longer edition of the movie, often referred to as the director's cut, "international version" or "version intégrale", that has approximately twenty minutes of additional footage that was removed from the original release in response to American test screenings. The additional material is found in the film's second act, and somewhat alters the tenor of Léon and Mathilda's relationship by delving more obviously into the notion that their interaction is more than just between a father figure and a daughter. In one scene, Mathilda plays Russian Roulette to try and get Léon to admit he loves her; in another, she openly asks him to be her first lover (the two are seen waking up in bed together after he refuses, though only the version intégrale gives the proper context to the scene by showing them falling asleep in the first place). Most of the other material in the longer cut involves Mathilda actually accompanying Léon on several of his hits; while she is never shown actually pulling the trigger of a real gun, she is obviously at least an accessory to several murders.

Now take it back or I will strike down upon thee with great vengeance and furious anger you who would attempt to poison and destroy my brothers. And you will know my name is the Lord when I lay my vengeance upon thee.

58. I loved that one duel in Seven Samuria
where they first went at it with bamboo... and when the loser refused to admit defeat they went at it for real.

It was just so powerful. Seeing this 'brave' warrior, too stubborn to admit that he would lose... but still too frightened to charge right in once they were using real blades. And there was no spray of blood. No gore. No long trading of blows. Just a single, swift motion... then it was over.

51. David Strathairn as Sid Hatfield in "Matewan."
John Sayles really ratchets up the suspense in that movie, not just in the pivotal encounter towards the end but at various points in the film.

Oh, and he also gave a great gun scene to Mary McDonnell as well, though that one was much more of a surprise.
