10. My grandfather actually did it

He had deserted the Imperial Russian Army and was wandering around Europe when a recruiter told him that with his education and experience, he'd be an officer in no time.

He was shipped to Algeria, where he soon noticed that the death rate among his fellow recruits was unusually high: heat stroke, disease, ill-treatment, and hostile Arabs.

He then deserted his SECOND army and by the time he made it to the States, he was staunchly anti-war.

I'd pretty much soured on the U.S. Army after seeing some unethical stuff. A dangerously incompetent officer had one of his fuck-ups covered up by the Battalion C.O. to protect his career. I thought half-seriously about joining the FFL as a tank crewman. I even had my nome-de-guerre picked out: Jean-Robert Antoneux.

I got over it. B-) I miss being a tanker, but I love being a civilian. :-)

17. I bought a VW Van

From a French guy in Toronto in 1972 to go to Mexico :)

It was August - sweating hot, and he was shivering, wrapped in a blanket.

Told me he had been in the French Foreign Legion and got malaria.

I did,nt ask why broken heart I think, but he was with a beautiful woman then.

Cool guy - the VW Van had already 3 trips to Mexico.

Me, I loved Guatemala more

18. Stan and Ollie did, and sorta had fun, but it landed them in jail

In the jail cell, they learn they are to be shot at dawn for desertion. This bums them out, but they regain their spirits as Stan discovers that he can play his bed springs like a harp. He starts playing, ironically, "The World is Waiting for Sunrise", in an obvious homage to the great Harpo Marx, a contemporary comedian who always played the harp in a similar style.
