How do you go about selling a car?
I moved back to NYC and it's very hard and expensive to keep a car while living there. I'm thinking of selling my car but am clueless about how to do it a safe way.
I don't want to do Craigslist, even though it could potentially bring in more prospective buyers and thus a higher price. I'm concerned about the safety factor. I don't think I would feel safe sitting in a car with a stranger while he was test driving my car.
In light of that, what is the best thing to do? Go to a used car lot? Is there something I'm not thinking of?

Whenever I've had questions, you Lounge Lizards have always helped me out. Thanks for any suggestions you may have. Also, please don't offended if I don't respond right away. I'm not going to be able to check anything on the internet for most of the day.

1. Use Cars.com
www.cars.com. They get so many hits, you can put up the photos, ask a realistic price and go from there. Use www.kbb.com (Kelley Blue Book to determine your car's estimated worth.

Have fun.

PS what is it?

4. 1995 BMW 525i automatic in good condition
It has about 138k miles on it and is in good condition. It was always garaged so the body looks good.

for a place close by that pays to haul away dead cars. Every car i've ever owned, I drove until it died, or had something broke that was too expensive to fix, and not worht fixing.

There's probably other ways.

7. Rumors of my car's death are greatly exaggerated
I also believe in driving a car into ground -- it's the only way to get your money's worth out of it. However, I'm giving up my car because it is prohibitively expensive to have a car in Manhattan, not because it's dead.
I'm actually very attached to the car. I've had it 12 years and it has kept me safe while driving in comfort. I'll probably do a little grieving when it's gone. Also, if I ever should see a car like it drive by, I'll probably look real closely to see if it's my old car.

8. i sold my car by accident
the driver's side window wasn't working, so I brought it to a shop near my house. I told the guy there I was selling the car, so I wanted to know the price he would charge the fix the window.

he said, how much do you want for it?

I said $2,000. (it was a 1995 Honda Accord)

He said, I'll give you $1,550.

The next day, I sold him the car. I was expecting to trade it in when I bought my new car. I would have been happy getting $1,000 for it. The only thing that worked on the car was the engine and the radio.

The odometer stopped after 70,000 miles. So I'm sure he just fixed that and is now selling it for probably $3,000.

9. Great story
I particularly like it because I had to have the driver's window fixed about a month or so ago. If I had talked to you before then, I would have tried to sell it then. Oh well, I lost that opportunity.
