12. Ah man, I HATE freezing rain!
Years ago, I was working the night shift at one of the burger joints in the town I lived in. It started freezing rain, and I had to drive home in it. What normally took me about 15 minutes took over an hour because of how slow I had to go, sliding, etc. I was never so happy to pull up in front of the house as I was that night.

14. We generally don't get a lot of snow here in SeattleLand.
Given how hilly it is around here, when we have ice or snow, the city shuts down a lot of the side streets. Trying to drive on them would be the equivalent of a suicide run.

To make matters worse, the furnace just went out. Just had the power company out the other day to get it going, and poof, the pilot light goes out. I've tried to get it started, but no go. Called the power company, and the soonest they can get someone out here is the end of next week! Landlord said he'll come out if necessary, but right now, I'm not going to ask him to drive. At least we have space heaters.

then it's supposed to rain and will make lots of slush!

Ugh! I can't wait. :eyes:

27. OMG, that sucks about your furnace. You have my sympathies
we recently paid to run an extra heating duct into our back office. We've lived in this single level ranch for over 10 yrs and the office was an illegal addition built onto the garage before we built it. It's not hooked in with the rest of the heating system of the house, meaning that it would typically be about 10 degrees colder in the winter time. Whenever we had family come visit us during the holidays, they would have to use a space heater to warm the room up.....kaching, kaching! Those space heaters really use up a lot of electricity, which costs major bucks. We've been meaning to get a heating duct in there for a long time, but never wanted to spend the money.

It took getting a PG&E bill of almost $700 for one month last winter for me to change my mind!! :wow: Fuck that. I decided we're not going through another winter of over-the-top heating bills again. We invested in double-paned windows throughout the house a couple yrs ago, which we're still paying off, too. Good investment, though.

The other big investment we just made was finally replacing our fireplace with a wood-burning insert. Basically, 90% of whatever heat the fire was generating was going straight up the chimney, almost a total waste. We'd been wanting to do that project forever, too, but didn't want to spend the money.

So, once again, we dipped into the ole equity line to pay for it, but I think in the long run it'll be money well-spent. It's got a two-speed blower that uses only as much energy as a 60watt lightbulb, amazingly enough. We can heat up to 2000 sq ft from this unit! Incredible. Yes, it's gonna make a HUGE difference on our heating costs. I've hardly had to turn the furnace on at all, since we got it a few weeks ago. I'm hoping it'll pay for itself over the next few years.

Anyway, blah, blah, blah....I hope you can keep cozy somehow. Hang in there.

36. I know, I completely freaked out when we got it
between the extra fridge in the garage, the hottub which is constantly hot, the Xmas lights, the space heater which the dear visiting relatives leave on ALL NIGHT, the long and many showers our holiday company takes, our Jan bill was a total disaster. Ugh.

32. I manage all right in it, but there are a lot of crazies out there who
think they are super drivers, especially if they're driving big SUV's or trucks. Yeah, they may manage all right as far as driving, but their rigs slide just as much as the smaller ones do if they hit the brakes too hard.

I do need to go to the store, though, but fortunately for me, there are two small stores within half a mile of my house, and a large grocery store about a mile away, so I know I won't starve or anything.
