I'm sorry, but they're just too scary. Even the ones that don't bite. Don't be crazy and go anywhere near them!

1. But... but... i like them!
Think how neat it is that they've been such a successful group, evolutionarily speaking. No limbs at all! And they do just fine.

And some of them are really cute!

2. I likes em too!
most are very docile and beneficial. Had a black snake a few years ago that I picked up in the woods. Named her Tasha. She hung out in our barn and kept the copperheads away.

11. That's how I feel about spiders. I've gotten a little more rational
about it as I get older, but there was a time when I couldn't touch a picture of one in a book. Snakes, on the other hand, don't bother me.

34. Docile? No. Beneficial? Yes.
All snakes subsist on rodents, amphibians and other things that are normally considered pests...ones that, if there were no controls such as snakes, would quite quickly take over the world.

Copperheads are poisonous. And have a tendency to hide in woodpiles and piles of leaves! We have them in Texas. :scared:

6. I've never understood why
people have an irrational fear of all snakes. There are some that could hurt a human, yes, but most will get out of your way if they can!

I bet Tasha was happy to keep the rodent population down too! :D

7. My dad always said that black snakes would keep poisonous
snakes away, but I've never seen anything to back that up. I know that we had a healthy population of black snakes around the place when I was growing up and I don't recall ever seeing any copperheads or any other venomous snakes. The black snakes that lived around the barn and shed were not to be bothered and any that were found in or near the house were to be caught and released at the barn.

29. Well, "black snake" isn't exactly a species of snake
A black racer would do no good; neither would a black rat snake. A black King snake (Niger, Splendida, or Nigritis) would be good; they will attack and eat rattlers and copperheads (hence the name "king" snake)

King snakes make docile pets, too. And they eat rodents, so they are good around a barn, although they will eat other rodent eating snakes, too.

39. Do you live in Florida?
If so, it could possibly have been an Indigo snake, which is in my opinion the most beautiful snake there is! Racers are black, but their scales are somewhat dull in sheen. Indigos' scales are like bits of black glass; they are shiney and beautiful to behold (and to hold:-)

It's actually the one snake I never owned that I always wanted to (they are protected). Now, the Mexican King Snake (lampropeltis nigritis) is very similar to the Indigo in terms of skin shine, but they are smaller and more readily available than Indigos. Needless to say I had a few of them :D

The only snakes I have found in my yard are black racers, corn snakes, and a few really small snakes that are pencil sized whos names I can't remember off hand. One little one is black with a red ring around it's neck. We do have moccasins in the lake though.

I think it was a racer as it had the yellow on the face. I could be wrong though!
See pic of one just like it I took down thread and please let me know what you think.

42. Yup. That's a black racer
When we go down to Sanibel Island for spring break, we see them and sometimes catch them for fun; strictly catch and release). Usually it results in a bite, but it's not too bad. I almost caught an Indigo in Ocala one year-- he was too fast and I was so surprised by him (probably about a 7 footer).

I'm not a fan of taking snakes out of the wild; they are a lot tamer when they are captive born/raised (generally speaking)

Here is a pic of a nice indigo:

26. Aww... but they're so cute.
I've known a few that were very friendly.

At my parents' old house we had this one black racer that kept coming back every year and living in the little two-foot gap between our porch and the back fence, where it was a bit overgrown and there were plenty of hiding places. At least we were pretty sure it was the same one. :) We didn't mind, it helped keep the place pest free and it never bothered us.

Edited on Tue Dec-04-07 12:41 PM by annonymous
Corn snakes eat mice and some will only accept live prey. If you are the least bit squeemish, then snakes are not the pet for you. My son's snakes escaped their cage and are somewhere in the house hibernating, but it is also possible one of the cats got them.
