Question about the movie "The Forgotten" (spoiler alert)

If it was supposed to be an experiment about the energy between mother and child, why did her neighbor, the ex-hockey player lose his daughter? And was it an experiment done by aliens?

He was experimented on also. It is rather ambiguous if they were aliens or supernatural beings,but that kinda makes it a better story.

I kind of got the sense that it was a test of "parental energy" in general but with a particular focus on the maternal vibe, in the belief that it's stronger.

I didn't necessarily think that they were aliens, though that's a reasonable conclusion based on the presentation. They were simply some form of advanced entity, sophisticated enough to manipulate our preception (and our record) of reality for purposes of their tests.

Based on the description on the box. I thought it was going to be about a woman having a nervous breakdown.
