ever unintentionally wound your kid?
last night i was hauling some firewood around, and LittleCoffee wanted to help (she's 3, and weighs about 30 pounds, but she's a beast when it comes to toting firewood). i was pushing the wheelbarrow when she ran up behind me, stepped on my foot, and wiped-out all over the driveway, skinning the crap out of her knee.

it was a total accident, but i still feel really bad about it.

1. I gave my daughter a black eye once
She was around 7 or 8 and I was pulling firewood off a big pile (always the firewood - what's up with that?). She was behind me and I lost my grip on a piece and my arm shot back and my elbow caught her full in the face.

Nice big shiner - I can imagine what they thought at school the next day.

And yes, I felt AWFUL.

44. My youngest, at 2, also ended up with a black eye.
I was making the bed and he came up behind me and bit me in the butt...hard. I jumped and he fell against the footboard. As bad as I felt about it, it was a good thing. We had been having an awful time with him biting and after that he never bit anyone again.

Most recently our hands collided and one of my giant pointy nails got her.

6. I dropped BoyMidlo on his head when he was a newborn.
Well, dropped isn't quite the word. I was picking up the Moses basket he was sleeping in and he sort of rolled out onto the floor.

Explains a heckuva lot, actually.

7. Oh, god, that reminds me
I was carrying my other daughter when she was just a baby and I ran out the door for something and her head SMACKED against the door jamb - her little mouth opened and she didn't start to howl for about 30 seconds. I thought I'd knocked her brains out.

Maybe that's why she became a Republican....

11. they really are a part of us
every time that I hear about a mom or a dad intentionally hurting a child, I go crazy wondering how they could do it. then I have to remember that the mom or dad is really disturbed. still, being a parent brings a whole new understanding of "this is going to hurt me a lot more than it's going to hurt you." (not that I spank my girl, I just understand the phrase more now)

13. Many many times
The worst thing that comes to mind was testing her bike riding reflexes by hitting her handlebars as she passed me. She wiped out into a cactus garden. It wasn't pretty

I reeealy felt bad, but it has since turned into family lore. A source of laughter and more often used as an example of what NOT to do while teaching your child.

14. my mom accidentally cut off the tip of my finger
Edited on Tue Dec-11-07 01:20 PM by Flaxbee
boy, did she feel BAAAAAAD. My poor mom. I was about 2, ran after her as she was going into the bathroom and tried to stop her closing the door (she didn't see me behind her) by sticking my fingers into the hinge-side of the door. SNIP! My right middle finger lost to the end of my nail. Fortunately, the rest of the family was home - mom was a nurse, dad a doctor, so my older sister was told to put the fingertip in a baggie with saltwater and we took off to the hospital, where the tip was sewn back on. I had a HUGE bandage up to my elbow for a long time. It looks a little different now, but not bad - but I don't have much feeling in the tip of it. It's a little shorter than my other middle finger, but you can't really tell unless I point it out.

on edit: as for my furkids, I trip over them all the time, unfortunately, but they forgive me. ;-)

15. I thought you meant as in "wound-up", like with sugar
But yes, I have injured my kid.

Whacked him in the forehead with a power drill.

It wasn't running, and there wasn't any bit in the chuck, but it took three stitches to close it up! :-(

I had picked up the cordless power drill off of the floor, then turned to the TV to put on the UConn game. It took a while to find it because it was an old, slow cable box. Once I found it, I turned, realizing suddenly that my kid had been deathly quiet for about 30 seconds. The kind of quiet that usually means sticking metal things in power outlets, yanno?

Well, he had quietly walked (not noisily ran, as he usually does) up right behind me, so when I quickly turned to look for him, the power drill in my hand smacked him in the forehead and cut his skin.

God, I felt terrible. There was so much blood and screaming!!!!!

18. When 1stBornGreenSon was an infant I came out of his room with him in my arms and drove his soft
spot into the corner of the thermostat on the hallway wall. He had a right angle dent in his scalp for some time after that.

He's almost ten now and seems to have all his mental faculties, so I guess the damage wasn't permanent. But boy, did I feel bad at the time.

is that I was convinced she did not need to go to the doctor, and we took her hours later than she should have gone. It happened one other time after that, and we took her in immediately.

so I only had a few minutes to look for him. I felt terrible leaving him behind. I was kissing my doggie on the forehead and when I stepped back tiny bubble was behind me. I had no idea. He was just on the lazyboy chair a few seconds before.......... I asked my fiance to please give him a giant hug and check him out when he gets home from work. Thanks for asking.

24. I assume you mean Physically?
Of course. Yesterday, my 16 month old daughter tripped over my foot and fell, her head hit the sippy cup she was holding resulting in a small bruise on her forehead.

If your kids like being around you, they're going to occasionally fall down in your vicinity.

I once banged his head against the baseboard molding when we were rough housing around a bit...I managed to hold it together long enough to check him out and allow his mother and others to continue the check before my shaking got the better of me.

One other time...well he was goal tending a net while we were playing a little one on one street hockey and he wasn't wearing a cup. I still feel bad about that one.

28. I turned away from my baby girl for a second ...
she is just learning to sit up on her own. I had her on the floor on a blanket, with toys to play with. I was sitting on the floor right behind her, and looked away for a second. She reached too far for a toy, and tipped over. I hadn't cleared the furniture far enough away, and her head clonked on the leg of a wooden stool.

I instantly felt like shit, and like a careless idiot. Her head is pretty hard now, though, and there was just a little surprised cry from her.

SonOfGoG the Elder was a toddler...I had an armload of groceries and opened the front gate with my foot. When I pushed the gate, I pushed too hard, and the latch flew back into my kid's face. Gave him a nasty black eye and all the ice cream he could eat.

39. Yep
She was 2 and in the "cockpit" of her bigwheel. I gave her a push and quickly stepped on the back and held on to the handle as we went down the "incline" of my neighbor's drive. ( I was only 26 and obviously pretty stupid) Being that I weighed more (helloooo?) I popped a wheely and she landed into a thick bed of flowers and wasn't hurt at all (thank God.) I slid and landed in my neighbors clothesline pole and broke my foot. I don't know what I was thinking ( I wasn't obviously). Dumbest thing I ever did. That was 25 years ago and she can still remember it!!

42. All the time
That's the problem with kids and dogs: they're short. I was always stepping on my kid, and I still do it to the dog, particularly when she's behind me and I take a step back. The dog forgives me. Fortunately you can't do a lot of damage stepping on someone's foot when you're barefoot, and I rarely wear shoes inside.

I remember once when my son was about four and he really wanted to ride a ferris wheel, and they wouldn't let him on without a grownup. I offered to accompany him. What was I thinking?! I have acrophobia so bad that I can't wear platform shoes. I guess I thought I'd be okay if I just closed my eyes....

I kept hold of his arm and kept reassuring him "There's nothing to be scared of!" He'd whimper "Mom, my arm hurts!". When we got off, I discovered I'd left five bruises in the shape of my fingers and thumb on his arm. That was quite enough maternal guilt to last at least a year.

There must have been no lasting harm, because he still likes the kind of carnival rides that make me want to throw up.

43. Yes
my son and I were playing and I had his arm and he was pulling away and I as afraid he'd fall so I hung on, gave him "nursemaid's elbow"

took him to the ER and the doc manipulated his elbow back in place and he was fine

he cried for 20 min before we got him to the ER.

I felt terrible.

I guess it is better to let go and watch him fall.
