Right Said Fred's one song was a novelty hit.

Breeders were a far better band overall, but never were that big.

8. Where..the hell...are the SMASHING PUMPKINS?!?!?
What the hell is this all about? 100 songs and you can't fit one--ONE--spot for the best rock band of the decade?

Today?
Tonight, Tonight?
Disarm?
1979?

Hell, I'll take "Bullet with Butterfly Wings" just to get them into the list, somewhere.

I'd go through the list to point out the horrible, horrible songs that got picked instead of the Smashing Pumpkins, but there are just. so. many. of. them!

Of course you've got your teeny boppers (Backstreet Boys, Britney, etc.) That awfulness and injustice speaks for itself. But Korn? Korn? "Freak on a Leash"? What the hell????

10. .
You're kidding, right?

I'm so happy I haven't had to listen to anything new by Billy Corgan in ages. That whiny voice of his makes me want to hurt things. And I owned a copy of Gish when it came out!

11. Billy Corgan is a lyrical god
Edited on Sun Dec-16-07 11:08 PM by PeterU
And is incredible with the guitar. (Just one listen to "Starla" off of Pisces Iscariot will confirm that.)

Yes, his voice may sound "whiny" to some, but so what? It beats the million and one lead singers who all try to sound like Eddie Vedder.

Simply put, Siamese Dream is about as perfect as a rock album as you'll ever find. Mellon Collie, too. And the later albums are all great too, if a bit misunderstood.

Pearl Jam and Nirvana will always be the face of 1990s alt rock, and rightly so--they were great bands who deserve the accolades. But Smashing Pumpkins will forever be the heart.

29. Perhaps if you listened to more than just Gish and a couple of the radio singles....
Edited on Mon Dec-17-07 09:37 AM by PeterU
...you'd think differently. Gish was good, but it was their debut and they still had to fine-tune their sound--it is probably my least favorite of all their terrific albums. By the time they did Siamese Dream, they hit their stride. Listen to Siamese Dream and Mellon Collie in their entirety, and not just the singles, and you'll understand why they are viewed as one of the best rock bands of the decade.

Look at it this way: Siamese Dream is the only major rock album of the 1990s I can think of that has an average 5 star rating of over 400 reviewers on Amazon.com. Not even Nirvana's Nevermind or Pearl Jam's Ten or Vs. can claim that level of acclaim amongst rock listeners.

45. You don't get it.
His voice is like fingernails on a chalkboard. I don't WANNA listen to more of it.

I had to hear that Melon Collie bullshit working at Record Town in the 90s and didn't see any difference between that and anything else.

If you wanna into ratings, I'd rather hear this guy wail anyday over any whiny Corgan crap:

The Pumpkins were an essential band of the 90s, and they deserve to be on the list if for no other reason than that.

No Rancid, Soul Asylum, Sponge or Smashing Pumpkins, but Britney Spears, Christina Aguilera , Celine Dion, MC Hammer and the Spice Girls. And VH1 being soulless corporate media, they're no doubt not embarrassed in the least by this.

25. Pretty Hate Machine came out in 1989
it didn't really catch on until a few years later, though, which is why many think it was released in the 90s.

Granted, they had other good songs in the 90s, but I still think of "Head Like A Hole" whenever I think of Nine Inch Nails.

Seriously.
I did a quick search of my music by year. Stumbled onto his masterpiece 1996 album With These Hands.

Every track on that album is better than most of the songs on that list

20. Wow, I like approximately 8 songs on this entire list.
That's not a good ratio.

Why does popular music get more vapid and lame with every passing decade? Say what you want about 70s AM pop, but even the schmaltziest of that group is still listenable to this day over diva air-raid-sirenfests like "I Will Always Love You" or anything sung by a modern R&B group.

Then again, underground music thrives year after year on an almost consistent basis. That we can be thankful for . . . until the band breaks up due to starvation or label screwjobs.

9, 12, 25, 27, 31, 50, 83, 85 and 94

BNL had better songs than "One Week"

Alice in Chains - "Heaven Beside You" is much better than "Man in the Box" (esp the radio edit)

34. Actually, compared to the 1980s and 2000s, mainstream rock in the 1990s was good
It moved away from a lot of the noisy, glam hairband stuff that plauged the 1980s (not saying that there was no good rock music during the 1980s, but that seemed to dominate). Songs became progressively better written and better performed. However, by the late 1990s, nu-metal was beginning to infiltrate the scene, and by this decade, it seemed to really take over.
