3. Small family.
Well, huge extended family, but the immediate family is only three adults (Dad, Sis and me and LeftyKid.) Since Dad does pretty well for himself, and there's not a huge family to spread the gift budget over, we tend to get nice stuff.

10. My oldest son bought me - picking it out himself - "Lincoln and Chief Justice Taney."
http://www.amazon.com/Lincoln-Chief-Justice-Taney-Presidents/dp/074325032X

My son is 13 years old, and I'm really proud of him for picking that book out. It's a gripping read, really. Taney is one of those guys in American history who you tend to see in black and white - no pun intended - as a really bad guy, the author of the Dred Scott decision. The book shows matters to be somewhat more complex, since it makes clear that Taney actually was more or less an opponent of slavery on some level. It was a real good pick.

For his mom he bought Steinbeck's "The Red Pony."

My youngest son, 8, gave me a notepad he bought at the school store.

While his brother was shopping in the bookstore, we went to the science section, and started poking around for books that might tell us a little about cosmic rays, because he's been kind of obsessed lately with the nature of radiation - like his old man. We kept looking in indexes, and then we pulled "Alpha and Omega" by Charles Seife and got to the page with the chart on neutrinos. I went to put the book on the shelf when it came time to go, and he said, "Can we buy this book?"

I said, "No. We can't buy every book we see in the store."

He said, "I'll spend my own money on it."

He was serious. I was going to try to talk him out of it, but I didn't push it too hard. I let him buy the book.

He's been reading it aloud to the family. I had no idea that his reading level was that good. I mean, he makes a real and fairly sophisticated effort to say "Aristolean cosmology." He is able to discuss what he is reading with fair sophistication, especially since he's only in the third grade. He gets confused about some stuff, but hell...

So that was a pretty good Christmas present for me. My youngest son just bought his first science book on his own.

Every parent has inflated views of their kid - and I'm no exception - but I think that this kid may seriously be something special. I mean, he's a regular 8 year old in most ways - he still believes in Santa - but on the other hand, he has a mind like a steel trap. He can discuss stuff you told him once or twice about physics and a hell of a lot of other subjects months ago. If you ask this kid what the mass of a photon is, he will tell you that it is equal to hf/c2. (He will report the green letter "nu" where I write "f,")

(On the other hand, his third grade teacher just told my wife that he's not very good in math - but then again, she never asked him to convert numbers in base 10 to binary.)

My wife and I agreed not to buy anything for one another, since we already have too much "stuff."

The boys, though, got a Wii, some video games, and some other electronic stuff about which I know nothing. We bought them a little flip camera, and they've been running around taking silly pictures of each other.

a blender, some really nice face cream I love, a $100 gift certificate to one of my favorite restaurants, the new Ultimate Santana CD, a Mucha 2008 calendar, and (I love this!) a CSI Fingerprint Kit. 14. I did pretty well... and yet, not so well
250 GB external hard drive
$100 in cash, $150 in check
Socks
"Thinking Points" by George Lakoff
Couple of nice button-down shirts and a pullover
A toenail clipper.
A 5-pack of Slim-Jims and a flashlight (tradition) :-)
Soduku books, a pair of gloves, and a baklava (sp?)
And at some point I'm getting an almost-brand-new, Navy-surplus peacoat, which cost a pretty penny.

My parents, however, made sure that they got Sam (my son) a lot of battery-powered noisy toys to play with. They are evil. They smile at me and say "what goes around, comes around" and "well, we thought about a drum set, but decided against it. This year".

Looks like I need to steal some earplugs from work...

19. I'd rather post what I gave
I didn't get very much, and that's just fine with me. What I gave:

My Mums stocking:
A murano glass magnifying glass
A hand painted ceramic Art Nouveau nightlight
A leather bound notebook embossed with a replica of a 17th century silk pattern
Thrills chewing gum, the gum that tastes like soap!
A leopard print eyeglass cleaning cloth
Blown glass shoe and purse shaped ornaments
A mini cribbage board, foldable for easy transportation
Some funky cocktail napkins
A cute silver and enamel necklace in the shape of an eye mask
a purse hook ( http://www.cwdesignllc.com/servlet/StoreFront?gclid=CJ6EjsOuwJACFQ2nGgodTCH8Wg )
Some cranberry tea
A carved pen with a pirate on it
A really cute magnetic notepad for lists
Bejeweled pens from the Bombay company
A set of funky bookmarks and reusable stickers for marking pages
Some fun printed purse tissues
A teal purse mirror with a glass mosaic pattern on the back
A little slim flashlight printed with a 1920s woman
A pot of organic cinnamon honey
A tiny purse sized retractable tape measure with a pretty design on it.

Also for my Mum:
A set of coffee mugs that I addressed to her from the four cats

A new York Times handheld sudoku game
A gift certificate for us to go get manicures and pedicures

For my dad:
An mp3 player with an FM radio that I pre-loaded with every Gilbert and Sullivan opera in existence
Some things for his stocking like licorice babies and some nice skin care stuff

For my Grandma:
A lavender scarf that can also be worn as a shawl or.. I dunno something else.. it's very versatile, some matching gloves, and some lavender sachets

For my brother:
Some blue and brown throw pillows for his bed. My parents got him a new duvet and sheet set, so these matched perfectly.

Actually, that's really it. Everyone else is getting gifts from me late this year as I've been unable to really shop for anything with my bum knee.

All I got was a McNally Robinson book store gift certificate from my brother, $30 from grandma, some PJs, a robe, and my stocking stuff which was pretty unmentionable (socks, combs, travel sized whatevers, bizarre pens, kind of lame this year).

My mum and I are going out for lunch and to a fancy bra store to get me some new expensive bras as I'm having trouble in that area for fit recently, so I know I *am* getting it, just not yet. And I've not seen very many people to get much else.

In no particular order: Bottle of 10 Cane, Bottle of Ketel One, 6-bottle wine refrigerator, a silver iPod shuffle (for the gym), a new pickup for a guitar I bought last month, iTunes gift card, electric razor, shirts, a pullover, and finally.... my semi-significant other (LONG story) shocked the hell out of me with an emerald ring of his that I'd always admired. He's had it for probably 30 years. We're still in negotiations as to whether I can accept that, or not. He's making it so hard for me to break up.....

...which I refused. Literally, my dad tried to give me a rock with a plaque on it saying it came from the demolition of the old Ohio State Penitentiary. But I passed... it was about as big as a bowling ball.

I got three used books and a sweater I'll never ever wear.

Whoopee.

Maybe this is why I hate the commercialization of Christmas... I haven't gotten a decent, thoughtful gift in 30 years.

51. Mr. WMU got me some diamond earrings
They are very pretty! He also gave me some perfume (putting WMU Jr.'s name on the tag).

Mom and Dad got me a mini fridge to put in my classroom. Now I can have cold filtered water from my Brita pitcher anytime I want.

Also got lots of body wash, Gold Toe socks, a really nice fleece blanket, fleece slippers, and a tea for one set.

52. I'm getting my windows on my new car tinted.
Then I got a bunch of Best Buy gift cards which I'm putting toward getting an XBOX 360. My bros gave me an Amoeba Music gift certificate, and I also got the Die Hard Quadrilogy DVD set.

53. Nothing spectacular, but some good stuff
I got a Big Bobber floating cooler (looks like a giant fishing bob), a digital pedometer, some hot chocolate mix from Starbucks, new pajamas, a blue sweater, some antique medicine bottles, and some great winter gloves.

ginbarn got a stone from her family's ancestral castle in Scotland and some pictures of the castle ruins and adjoining farmhouse. Wow.
