8. Okay, here's the basic question

I'm all for immigration. The more the merrier, especially since cultural diversity (such as it is) is one of the few nice things that can still be said about America today.

It's sometimes suggested that undocumented immigrants who've lived here for X period of time without committing a crime might be allowed a path to full citizenship. I'm all for that, too.

But what's a good response to people who object that the very fact of entering this country illegally is a crime thereby making them ineligible for that route?

I'm really puzzled, and I'm more than a little embarrassed that I can't come up with a good answer. I mean, the first member of my family born on this continent made his debut in 1758, but I don't know how much paperwork his parents filled out when they arrived in this savage and uninhabited land (sarcasm there).
