6. Thanks for the education on ARGs, Chovexani. Interesting stuff. |
|
This does appear to be a "Blair Witch"-like introduction of a new film. I have to see if there is a free preview of it on our schedule. If not, I won't bother in any event. I got caught in a couple of these tangles in previous years -- for M. Knight Shyamalan movie(s) in particular.
Appreciate your post.

I'm awful. :D
I haven't been following this one as closely...the last one I was really into was the game for Lost.

2. The trailer is really good |
|
but, I've seen many a good trailer that translated into a sucky movie. The first trailer for the movie "Descent" was terrific as well, but the 2nd trailer sucked and the movie sucked, too.
However, it's an interesting concept. The roar sounds a bit Godzilla-esque.

4. Have followed this for some time |
|
I got a feeling it will kinda blow, but I am hoping I am wrong (ie, a lot of potential in it - just hope they can deliver).
I DO plan on seeing it in the theaters. I am worried though about the camera work (ie, going for a blair witch sort of thing with a monster and a lot of shaky camera angles).

I am very subject to motion sickness. Without the Steadicam, I could never be a movie reviewer. You might want to see this site if you do decide to go to this film: http://cloverfieldclues.blogspot.com/

12. It's being released in January - which is normally a month for the duds |
|
But by looking at the Trailer I can tell 2 things
The movie will probably be very poorly reviewed, maybe go into the theaters without a review period The movie will probably make a shitload of money

15. It's my understanding that the whole thing is shot in that jittery POV cam |
|
To simulate a handheld digital camera, or the like.
Has this technique ever worked on the big screen? For the whole length of the film?

23. What other movies have used that technique? |
|
It worked well at the beginning of "Saving Private Ryan"
I can recall "Blair Witch" off the top of my head, and also the shark movie "Open Water"
Anything else?
For the record, I got into the hype on Blair Witch and even fooled my ex-wife into thinking it was a real story for a while... however, I think I got too hyped up and was disappointed in the actual movie. Hype letdown, I guess.

26. Well, I asked for movies shot entirely in that format |
|
That nixes Private Ryan, and IMO even when the technique was used there (at Normandy, etc.) it was unsuccessful.
Blair Witch, well, I guess so, but don't you think that two hours of a camera up her nose is different, in terms of necessary cinematography, from a huge monster devastating a city? I'm not sure how effective it was even in Blair Witch, though I grant that the format does fit the intent.
Open Water. Hmm. I admit that I hadn't thought of that one, and if there's any precedent for successful use of POV-cam (outside of porn, I guess) then that's probably it. Still, there's the question of scope, but I won't quibble.
Anyway, I just don't think it's the best choice for a film about a huge monster.

24. Hm. It was irritating in blair witch... |
|
But this looks a bit bigger budget. And that might buy enough expertise to choreograph the shooting and editting properly. The trailer's really dramatic and well put-together, we might take this as a good sign...
Certainly I'll give it a peek...

It looked pretty darned good. I think it's probably one I'll spring for theater money to see.
