De-duping digital music collections
Is there some software I can download that can identify when I've accidentally loaded the same album twice onto my hard-drive and delete the extra copy?

1. Are you using a PC or a Mac?
Edited on Tue Jan-01-08 01:45 PM by Kutjara
Do you use any music management software like iTunes or Rhapsody?

on edit: I did a Google search and found this: www.fixtunes.com. I've never used it, but it seems to be what you're looking for.

3. Give www.fixtunes.com a try.

It claims to be able to do what you want.

on edit: I just noticed it costs $25. Try Googling something like "duplicate song detector" to see if there's a free alternative.

5. Assuming that you set up a file tree by genre, artist, then album,
it should be immediately apparent whether you have downloaded an album already.

And surely your iTunes or whatever musical program you are using also gives you a list of all the files, by artist and album - so you could just check that list?

6. Media Monkey
This program is GREAT. It will do what you're asking, and more. I don't know for sure if the free version will do it (I used the Gold version) but I am pretty sure it will. If not, it was free and no harm no foul. Anyway, I haven't been more impressed with a program in a long time.
