Cloverfield (movie). Monster attacks NYC; 9/11=Hiroshima, Godzilla?
Are we finally placing 9/11 into an appropriate metaphor, and is Godzilla a manifestation of the Japanese horror of the atomic age, as no other people may rightly have?

Will Guiliani claim victory over 9/11-ish movie monster?

1. There's no question that Godzilla is a fantastical recreation of atomic attack,
and a viewing of the Cloverfield trailer certainly shows that the movie plans to evoke 9/11 for all it's worth.

3. Uh, it's a monster movie.
J.J. Abrams has been quoted as such. Ever since he saw Godzilla, he's wanted to make a big scary monster movie (also the origin of "the monster" on Lost).

4. Fair enough, but even the few moments of the trailer scream "9/11" to me.
I might just be too sensitive (I can't stand human ugliness and violence; I can't deal with it).

7. I'm really sensitive about 9/11
It's still raw to me. I'm an NYer and worked in the Towers (I called in sick that day, but I worked on the first floor and likely would have made it out).

I didn't mean to jump down your throat or anything. I'm just really tired of people comparing everything to 9/11. I'd like to be able to enjoy my escapist entertainment again. :(

8. No offense taken or perceived...
I'm still raw about it as well. I have no concept of how to deal with human pain and misery, and worse, those who cause it on purpose. Strangely, I have a very good sense of who those people are...but have no idea on how to keep them away from me or others. All I can do is point..

I am very glad that you are still with us

5.  Can Cloverfield Promote Healing In A Post 911 America?
Can Cloverfield Promote Healing In A Post 911 America?

Is it possible that J.J. Abrams giant monster film, "Cloverfield", may be exactly what the American public needs to see after experiencing the horrors of 9/11? Could watching a giant monster smash buildings in New York City be good therapy? Anyone who has seen the latest trailers for the film can't help but make comparisons to the type of destruction they witnessed on that infamous September morning. Yet, millions of Americans are waiting in eager anticipation for the film to be released next month. Does all this seem crazy? Well, it might if the exact same thing didn't happen fifty-three years ago.

In 1954, Ishiro Honda unleashed the largest, and most destructive movie monster ever conceived of, Godzilla, into Japanese theaters. A mere nine years after the first two atomic bombs destroyed the Japanese cities of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, movie goers were treated to the same kind of fiery destruction, this time, being dealt out by a fictitious creature instead of American war planes. The movie was a huge success. In fact if it wasn't for Akira Kurosawa's cinematic masterpiece, "The Seven Samurai", the film would have walked away with Japan's equivalent of the Oscar for "best picture".

6. Thanks for that.
Children solve trauma in very healthy ways; we should learn from them.

9. You're welcome.
I've discussed this with others about Godzilla being so popular so soon after the bombs were dropped on Japan (the director, Ishiro Honda, fashioned the scenes of destruction on his memories of walking through Japan and seeing Nagasaki after the war was over), and it's interesting to see if that same dynamic will come into play with Cloverfield.

10. I didn't get the "9/11" impression from the trailers I've seen
However, I fully expect Rudy Giuliani to invoke 9/11 wherever possible, even if it's a fictional monster movie.

I was thinking more along the lines of "Independence Day" when I saw the trailer.

11. It's archetypal, really
The unknown, unpredictable, overwhelming "entity"...Cloverfield is actually my most recurring nightmare which I used to call the "Godzilla nightmare". Cloverfield is closer to my dream because they do not know what the source of destruction is.

But back to the OP, no I don't think it is 9-11 related except coincidentally; this is an archetypal fear that all sentient beings live with.

12. Hmm, is this the first movie since 9/11
where New York has been blown up and trashed? Is the taboo finally over? The only other movies I can think of are The Day After Tomorrow and I Am Legend. But those don't really have the raw destruction that Cloverfield promises.
