Getting rid of an old sofa--Any ideas?
I just ordered a new sofa today. They're happy to deliver it next week, but they won't take away the old one. Some folks say I should donate the old one to a charity, but it's not in the best shape: Cushions and one armrest are torn up.

Is there such thing as a service that can take away big old sofas?

4. I've known of two old sofas that went on to appear in plays
all because of craigslist. so even if you think nobody would want it, it's worth a try.

5. A woman's shelter or
safehouse is also an idea. Many of those women left violent relationships and tend not to look a gift horse in the mouth when it comes to furnishing their new, SAFE, homes.

6. a gallon of gas and a wooden match
you don't even have to move the couch outside! it's super easy.

ok, that's a joke. please don't set your couch on fire in your living room. move it to the back porch first.

38. we did that in college
on the front lawn in front of our apartment building(the slut huts, FYI) on a busy street. police and fire units were dispatched. we thought it was pretty cool at the time. the police, fire dept, landlord and the guy who got stuck with the cleaning bill were not amused.

9. Give it to charity anyway
Someone with no couch and little money won't mind a bit of damage fixable with grey tape.

Been there - done that.

13. You might give goodwill a call.
Ask them if they take them in that condition. It's been years ago, but a neighbor used to work for them doing reupholstery. Don't know if they still do that or not.

15. A lot of charities won't even take old sofas anymore
I know that a couple of the big local ones put a moratorium on them because they had way too many already. Call around, because your mileage may vary.

A lot of broke college kids would LOVE a free couch in any shape for their apartment if they do not live in the dorms.

19. Break it down
I had the same problem last year. I wound up doing a demolition number on the sofa. Then I hauled the pieces to my car, stuffed it in, and brought it to the dump. Doing that cost me only $8.

Before I did that I spent three months trying to give it away but all the charities I spoke with didn't want it. I tried giving it away. No one wanted it.

So ripping it apart with a crow bar and a knife was strangely satisfying because it finally got out of the middle of my $#&$%#$% living room.

28. Craigslist.org honey
Don't list it too cheap, nobody will want to look at it.
Pictures help a whole lot.

Sold an old sofabed that was 20 years old for $50 bucks, so not only did I not have to pay to have it hauled off, I made money on the deal.

31. Around here, as long as the weather isn't bad, we just put them at the street.
Someone usually comes and gets them within 24 hours as long as they aren't completely trashed. Lots of garbage hunters around here.

35. That's how we do a lot of recycling, too.
I put an old couch out by the side of the road and within 15 minutes it was picked up. I just make a nice big FREE sign.

I live on a fairly busy road. Anything we put out -- goes very fast.

32. Does your city offer large trash day?
Edited on Sun Jan-06-08 11:15 AM by rainbow4321
Once a month our city lets us put whatever we want out (furniture, kitchen appliences, anything at all)...they come by with one of those trucks that compacts stuff. I put our old, huge sofa out a few years back and they took it. I watched them throw it in the back of the compact truck that broke it down into pieces.
