What are your views on Murphy's Law? |
|
I'm doing a science fair project on it involving bread and jam. But what are your views on it?
If you don't know, Murphy's Law is 'If anything can go wrong, it will go wrong'

1. I'm a total non-believer |

I drive a semi hauling double trailers every day. Lots of bad things could go wrong but they rarely do.

2. I think there is a caveat... |
|
"If something can go wrong, it will, unless you consider the things that can go wrong and prevent them."
Case study #1: -You're making toast and jelly. -Jelly always seems to fall off the bread. -Solution: spread the jelly thin, and not very close to the edges. --also: avoid spreading jelly over trans-slice holes.

I have a contingency plan for every potential failure so everything will be fine. Pessimists help me immensely by pointing out everything that can go wrong. I listen to Murphy often, but he's wrong about as often as he's right.

"Murphy was an optimist."

Bad things happen to good people sometimes. By being a good person, however, you still have your soul. If you ever need a hand with something other than the soul department, gimme a holler. I live near Dayton which is not too far away. If I can help I will.

from a broken arm (slipped on the ice) to being hit by a drunk driver, the last 12 months have been a rollercoaster. And those are just a couple of things that happened.

9. I swear by several precepts |
|
one of which is the bread always falls butter side down and the other is: how embarrassing the fall or accident is, is in direct proportion to how many people are watching.

15. Anyone who has developed software for any length of time... |
|
.. will attest to the infallibility of Murphy's law. Because the computer only does exactly what you tell it, and inevitably you will not give it perfect instructions the first time out on a complex piece of work.
Murphy steps in to make sure that the user/customer finds whatever deficiencies your program may have in record time. :)

16. I add some caveats to my Murphy's Law. |
|
If anything can go wrong, it may, given enough time and repeated stupid behavior by some involved party.
Murphy's Law really seems to lean a little much towards "destiny" for me to think it really has a scientific application, the "destiny" always being on the bad side.

17. A more accurate phrasing of Murphy's Law |
|
"If anything can go wrong, it will, and at the worst possible time."
Your PB&J sandwith may drip at anytime, but it will drop only on expensive, hard-to-clean clothing and/or before a major social function.
