Noam Sayin? (You Know What I'm Saying?) ... a small rant.
I don't know if it's just a DC/MD/VA colloquialism, or if it's reached national proportions... but I notice more and more how folks (mostly in the 20-40 range) substitute the phrase "Noam Sayin?" when they can't think of the right word or the best way to explain a concept or idea.

No, sorry. As a matter of fact, I don't know what you're saying. I'm not a mind reader. So stop saying that!

Noam Sayin? Noam Sayin? Noam Sayin?

Stop mumbling, stop slurring, and say what you mean. Please don't expect me to contextually fill-in-the-blanks of the message you're trying to convey, simply because you find it easier to say "Noam Sayin?" instead of actually SAYING IT YOURSELF!!

"Noam Sayin?" is in the top-ten of my personal pet peeves. It's followed closely by those who constantly say "you-know".

4. It's just plain laziness
like saying "and stuff" or "we were, like, shopping" or inserting "ummm" or "uh" into your speechifyin'.

I just wanna slap in the forehead and say "Think about what you want to say for a moment or two, so you can speak clearly, and let me know what you mean. Don't just speak from your lower brain stem."

5. I agree
I think that "noam sayin'" & "you know" are only longer substitutes for "um", "uh", & "er". I've heard a few people who sprinkle their speech with "noam sayin'" so liberally that I couldn't make head or tails of what they were actually trying to say.

7. Worse than that: eye-ite
It's supposed to be 'allright', but comes out eye-ITE. It's not cool, on the contrary, it makes you sound illiterate. Just like that mumbling shizzle-dizzle crap that Snoop Dog comes up with all the time. Sounds like baby talk. I guess if you can't speak English, you have to make up your own language.

8. I feel your pain, Allen...
As you know, I'm in Fredericksburg, and this phrase is a phenomenon here as well. I HATE it.

There's one from Philly that I always loathed... "Jeet jet?" This is translated as, "Have you eaten yet?" (Didja eat yet?)

Or the ever-popular rejoinder to the last phrase.."Nahju?", which translates to, "No, have you?" (Nah, you?)

Then there's the lovely, "Yooz gon?" which translates to, "Will you people be joining us?" (You's going?)

USE PROPER DICTION, PEOPLE!!

Edited on Wed Aug-06-03 11:29 AM by arwalden
Tell me if this is the LEAST bit correct. Perhaps I learned something incorrectly. I hear it CONTINUALLY on the P.A. system at Home Depot... it drives me NUTS!

"Bob from Flooring... you're needed to the customer service counter."

"An associate from plumbing is needed to aisle 22 for customer assistance.

"We need an associate from each department to the returns desk to pick up returned merchandise."

ARGH!!! I just want to slap someone.

17. Oh, I HATE "aks"
Edited on Wed Aug-06-03 11:35 AM by Rabrrrrrr
Sounds so terrible. And bad grammar and diction over the PA system always bad, too...

And idiots working the cash registers, who refuse to enunciate, so I can't understand them, and I have ask them over and over to repeat themselves so I can understand what the hell they're saying, and of course they get mad at ME for apparently being an idiot, but then I say, "When you refuse to look at me when you speak, and then you say atsateyfofityin into the cash register, I don't know what the hell you mean, whether it's a question or a statement, whether it's directed at me or not, or if maybe you're having an emergency."

Jeezuz, why can't people just speak clearly?

Had one last night at Taco Bell, bad attitude, totally unhelpful to customers, and asI watched her, it wasn't just me who couldn't understand her, but many others in the line, too, even the others who also spoke lazy incomperhenisble english. And these were all native english speaking people of three diverse cultures who couldn't understand her.

24. I dislike it even when they enunciate it clearly.
Statements such as "um" and "well" were said to be linguistic devices that helped the speaker formulate clearer sentences in speech. But I think they have evolved into full sentences, i.e. "Noam saying." They have morphed into a device used in place of thought; not, as in the past, as devices used to give the brain more time to process before moving the mouth.

That is why, I get upset if I speak that way or fall into the use of lingo and cliché without having processed them first in my frontal lobes.

Where you at? OR he sleep. ANother one is The bestest and the onliest. I constantly have to remind my staff that they are professionals and should speak proper English. Another thing that pisses me off is this spanglish thing. As a Latina I beleive that you should speak spanish without anglicizing the words.
