Who likes marbles??? Do you still have yours??
Edited on Wed Aug-06-03 11:12 AM by SoCalDem
We found a deerskin pouch of marbles that my husband had when he was a little boy.. Even though I was a girl, I was ruthless at marbles.. I would win everyone's BEST ones .. But like my mental marbles, I lost them along the way :(

2. ooh, ooh, me me!
I have my dad's collection of them. A few years ago I found a slightly chipped (but you can't really see the chips) Waterford crystal "biscuit barrel" at a garage sale, and it's great for the marbles! I love to take them out and look at them and hold them. They are so beautiful. I think they're like looking into tiny, little worlds of their own.

In fact, I'm going to go look at them right now!

My beautiful glass marbles are in storage down there in front of the old school house. My Indian Princess in the fifth grade (Joanie) with whom I was madly in love stored them there for me.. They (The marbles) are buried down in the dirt right where she 'STOMPED THEM INTO THE MUD' one day long ago.

10. Finding a few more all the time
As most long time DUers may know, I still live in the house I grew up in. Growing up, my brother Chuck and I played marbles with the neighborhood kids out in the yard and any number of marbles got lost in those years.
Since mom died in 1994, I've been re and re-relandscaping the yard. As dirt is shovelled and earth moved, these same marbles, lost 40 years ago, keep popping up randomly -- but I'm finding a few more each year. They go into a coffee can and I'd guess I've unearthed 50 or so.
The nice thing about living here is that there is no real sense of now. Everything from the time I was 4 until today is "now." I don't feel as though I'm 46 or 26 or 6. This house is a womb and I am one with it. The marbles are just part of that and a little bit of 1963 reappears every time I find one.
John
Of course, I can barely bend over to pick them up any more, but it's reassuring nevertheless.
