Best rock salt for icy driveways? |
|
I ask because when I was last at Home Despot I was stuck between the water-filtration salt and the ice-melt stuff, and the employee I flagged down said that the ice-melt was the better choice but wouldn't say why, so I opted for the water filtration salt.
It seemed like the better buy; the grains were enormous and stuck around for days, and I got 50 lbs. for less than $4.50, rather than $7.50+ for 40 lbs. of the ice-melt. Did I screw up?

1. Sodium chloride (rock salt, halite) is |
|
Corrosive - damages concrete & vegetation. Calcium chloride melts ice faster than sodium chloride.
I don't know where you are, but it also is better at lower temps.
