And wanted to cry. And I'm a veteran of Usenet flame wars, for pity's sake. I have a thick skin, I've been on the internet a really long time.

This is different, though. I'm not being a smartass this time. I was really close to just crying and not ever logging onto DU again. I know, intellectually, that there are people who hate me without ever getting to know me simply because of how I was born. I get that.

But to see it in such stark terms, especially from people who purport to be on my side...it's like a hit in the gut. There have always been racists and homophobes on DU, but it seems like there are more and more of them. And it doesn't get any better, it just gets worse.
