Poll question: Married DUers: Do you wear your ring? |
|
Edited on Wed Jan-16-08 05:20 PM by KansDem
Last year I ran into someone I hadn't seen since high school. We chatted and she asked me if I was married, looking at my left hand at the same time. I don't wear my ring (haven't since my wife and I got home from our honeymoon), and I wondered afterward if she might have thought I was "looking to stray." I have had coworkers in previous jobs (mostly women) who have registered disdain when they discovered I'm married but do not wear a ring. They thought I was "on the prowl." I'm not! I've been faithful to my wife of 20 years but I just don't like adornment on my fingers (plus, I almost lost it on our honeymoon).
Really!
How does the DU feel about this?
On edit: If you vote "Other" please explain...

I almost lost mine on our honeymoon. I was attempting to parallel park and was "palming" the steering wheel rather quickly, rotating it clockwise. My ring was too large and we were going to have it resized when we got back home. Anyway, I stopped my hand abruptly (in the 9 o'clock position) and the ring flew off and nearly out the car window. I was lucky--if it had gone out the window it would have rolled to who knows where since we were on a steep hill. Whew...!

when I worked as a cook and in a warehouse and even when I worked in a forensic laboratory I would not wear any jewelry. too many things to go wrong too many situations that will ruin jewelry. I take my ring off if I'm doing yard work or wrenching on my bike. My dad lost his wedding ring and college ring, mom replaced both of them twice before she gave up. my parents were married for 45 years , I don't think the ring was a big issue.

I always wear mine...
Unless I'm going in for surgery or some such, and then they want you to remove all your jewelry...
Otherwise, it's always on!
I couldn't get my husband to wear one...sigh...
You know ...his dad didn't, and mine did...
42 years, though, and he's never strayed...

my wife had stopped wearing hers for whatever reason long before that.
Now we're separated and I don't even have my ring as it must be at the house with her.

7. I have not been able to since my last surgery when I lost my .leg. |
|
The IVs they gave me tore up my veins, and my hand swells sometimes and my ring digs into my finger. So I had to stop wearing it. My wife still wears hers. But I can not wear mine. I am thinking about getting a chain and putting my ring on that.

As far as your question goes, though- if they're jumping to conclusions about you because you're not wearing a band, then they have the problem.

The engagement ring sticks out and gets caught on things, and the wedding ring looks wrong without the notchy part fitting into it. So I don't wear my "wedding" ring. I wear a 3 dollar plain silver ring I bought at big lots, instead. :)

I think I may have a phobia about wearing them (bothers the hell out of me since I don't like the idea of it not coming off or possibily cutting off circulation.) My wife understood so she was the only one that wore a ring :)

but I sometimes don't. My wife is the same. We both work with our hands sometimes, and sometimes just don't feel like it. I've gotten that reaction too, and I usually tell them it's easier to get laid wearing the ring. Usually shuts them up.

at my hand to see if there is a wedding ring there. I didn't realize what they were doing at first until one day, I had an early doctor's appointment and went into the office as the first customer. The assistant there was all perky and chatty and seemed very happy to see me (I guess I looked good that day, since I was going into work right after and was probably business casual) - so, I took off my coat and hung it up and she handed me some forms. I reached up with my left hand to take them and I saw that she looked at my left hand and it was literally like Superman being exposed to Kryptonite. You could almost see the color drain out of her face... and, she went from being perky and happy to being cool & formal. I realized it was The Ring.
Ever since then, I've noticed when a woman looks down, they're probably looking for a ring.

Since metal doesn't shrink must be my knucle that expanded.
Last time my ring was off was when I told that to my wife -- she used baby oil and almost yanked my finger off, but she did succeed. Hah! We put it back on quick before the knuckle got any bigger.
I'd be pleased to be fossilized wearing it. If someone digs my bones up a million years from now I hope they enjoy the ring.

54. actually I got into the habit of not wearing it very early on. The first week we were married |
|
I woke up in the middle of the night and found myself slipping the ring off. My fingers had swelled up while I was sleeping. If I had taken it off while asleep who knows where it might have ended up? So I stopped wearing it at bedtime right from the get-go, and as I got heavier I eventually decided I couldn't deal with the pain of it being swollen anymore (even in the daytime) and put it away in my jewelry box. :(
It's too bad, too, because it is a gorgeous hand crafted ring. Aside from the two hubby and I have there is only one more out there like it.

My wife does, though. I found her wedding band on a dig in a 19th century wooden sewer line. It was black and everyone assumed it was a curtain ring, or something. I knew otherwise and chipped off a hundred years or crud to discover a very pleasant pristine gold band that fit my wife's finger. She was leary of wearing it initially, but soon got over it when I explained it was found in the hotel laundry/seamstress line; it was simply lost, and not thrown away in anger. I also found many coins, thimbles, sewing needles, and pounds of brass straight pins in that area.

I cannot abide the feel of rings on my fingers when I am in my home. It bugs the daylights out of me. First thing I do when I get home is head straight for my jewelry box to remove it as well as all other jewelry.
But the minute I cross the threshhold to go out in public I can instantly feel its absence if I've forgotten to put it on and have to turn around and go get it. Same thing with my watch, but I waltz out without earrings constantly and then feel naked without them later.
Bizzare, I know.
I think it started with all the hand washing when my first born was a newborn. The skin under my ring got really chafed. I don't remember doing this before that. Psychologists, go ahead and have a field day with this one.

I didn't like wearing the ring at first but give it a month or two then you don't notice it is there.

Repairing or working with electronic/mechanical equipment. A nasty way to lose a finger, hooks on moving machinery and gold is an excellent conductor of electricity.
My father was an electrician and my husband, a mechanic. Neither ever wore a wedding ring and neither ever 'wandered'.
