And you thought * faced a tough crowd last night.
After watching Pelosi sitting behind the pretzelnut last night and clapping sometimes when I thought she shouldn't and seeing only a few repukes clapping in the audience when * spewed out his warped view of the US and world I thought of this wren who faced some harsh critics in my yard the other day. Actually, I think Congress should be at least this harsh with *! Maybe they could learn something from these birds. :) BTW, for your birders, I am trying to decide if this a Carolina or Bewick's wren. Both have ranges that overlap in my area. By size alone, I think it is a carolina, but I haven't seen a bewick's in some time so it is hard to compare size in my head. Bewick's are smaller.

Anyhow, here you go...

First it was still.

But then it started to belt it out.

It continued to sing.

And sing.

Some of its friends were not impressed like this finch pair.

The male looks quite smug.

The female is definitely not impressed.

This Savannah Sparrow turned to take a look at the wren, but in the end, was less than congratulatory.

In an adjoining thicket, these red-bellied woodpeckers were paying no attention. In fact, they were quite rude as these females were apparently squaking about this male. Can you imagine a cat-fight in the audience while someone is performing? Poor wren. Where is the respect?
Here is the pair of females taking a break from bickering.

One decides to look around to see from where this "noise" is coming.

Here's the male who has decided to eat through the performance.

This ruby crowned kinglet, perked up when it heard the song.

But apparently did not like one of the notes so it gave the wren a "look."

Tough crowd.

1. Appropriate...Most of the people at the SOTU are birdbrains anyway...
Great pictures. On the wren..We have Carolina Wrens aplenty around here...and I don't THINK thats a Carolina wren, I think the white streak is a bit more slanted on a Carolina. I could be wrong..What did the song sound like? Carolina's have that very distinct "teakettle, teakettle, teakettle, tea".
And a red-bellied woodpecker I saw as a child at camp is probably the bird that got me interested in birding

2. Carolina wrens are damn fearless!
When they come back to our area (soon), they scold the shit out of us if we get all in their space...and they LIKE to taunt us and get real close...for a small bird they are LOUD

We love them...they like our back porch and come up to the screen buzzing and doing their own unique and TOTALLY identifiable wren noise all the time

Those kinglets can also be intimidating for a small bird..very aggressive with humans...I think they have little birds disease...the only more "busy" bird are nuthatches and chickadees

:)

6. Mine tend to hide more, but I'd like to see them more.
They have a nest in our honeysuckle, but the European House Sparrows I think are bothering them because they are trying to move in.

11. great photos, thank you!
the ruby crowned kinglet in the last photo is funny - definitely giving a 'look'

I love to hear birdsong, but there is something about actually seeing the small creature make such a lovely noise that stops me in my tracks. Heard/saw a cardinal the other day on the way out of the house. Just stood and watched as long as he wanted to sing.
