What can you tell me about North Carolina State U? |
|
apparently they're looking at my niece for volleyball -- I don't know much about NCState, would love to have some info/opinions other than what I see on their website.
Thanks!

5. Went there for my undergrad |
|
Edited on Mon Feb-04-08 04:28 PM by NYCparalegal
huge school with a nice, if too brick-y, campus in Raleigh, NC. The main 'drag' is Hillsborough Street which sucks big time. But it's not far from Chapel Hell (umm... Hill :) and Durham for more entertainment options. There's plenty of stuff around Raleigh itself and it is a fairly cosmopolitan city. There's a Trader Joe's in Cary and you're not far from Research Triangle Park.
As far as academics go, if your niece is into the sciences and engineering she's come to the right place. The liberal arts are strong too, but NC State is known as an engineering/science school. The School of Architecture and the School of Design attract a creative mix of students as well. It also has a veterinary school and a terrific School of Textiles at the new Centennial campus.
Sports-wise... NC State is part of the famed ACC (Atlantic Coast Conference) in all varsity sports. Of course, football and men's basketball rule, but women's basketball and soccer are also popular. The athletic facilities are terrific. I played intramural volleyball and I was also a volleyball umpire/ref. I really enjoyed my time there. There are people from everywhere around the world. Like all other campuses, it has its pros and cons, but I had a great experience - both socially and academically. {edited to add: John Edwards got his undergrad there; among other alumni there lurks one John Tesh :D).

that I'll pass along to my sister. I've driven through the area once and it struck me as very urban, but I have heard that it is a great school. Yeah, I think my niece will do something in the science area, not sure what, though. And I"m going to check out their textiles school for my own interest! Cool! I wish I'd figured out I like textiles/design 15 years ago before I went to law school... x(

28. The College of Textiles is excellent |
|
My best friend majored in textile chemistry and she was working on engineered denim for heavy duty jeans. The Centennial campus is amazing, too. Raleigh is not much to crow about, but it is a very vibrant place with lots of things going on and Carolina/Duke are not far away. I spent many a days frolicking around Duke's West Campus and loitering around Cameron Indoor Stadium, but my favorite memories are the Sarah P. Duke gardens in the spring and Duke Chapel.
Oh yeah... basketball is a religion around those parts. God told me that anything a pale shade of blue is considered an abomination in God's eyes and proof of that shall be given this Wednesday night at 9 pm on ESPN :D
Now, I live in Wilmington, NC, and UNC-Wilmington is also a very good school with a terrific marine biology program and an intriguing marine archaeology area of emphasis. Did I mention the beaches?

10. EXCELLENT school -- and the academic cutting edge leader on quite a few things |
|
Great libray system.
I personally don't care for Raleigh, but the RTP area is very cosmopolitan. Close to the Outer Banks. Okay BBQ.
It would be a very good choice. It's a great school, even though Chapel Hill gets most of the acaddemic attention.

very blah, but the amenities in the surrounding area make it tolerable. She's from a much smaller city in the west, but something totally different from her hometown might be appealing to her.

30. Yeah, Raleigh's a bit bland (but I'm from NOLA). But it has great museums, and is really part of ... |
|
... the greater metro area that is the Triangle. You've got a lot of variety of experiences, between Chapel Hill, Carrboro, Durham and Raleigh. Then the mountains and the beach are all within a 2-4 hour drive.
My daughter's going to be attending NC State in the fall, and we're very excited. I like to point out, re the academic level of NC State, that a scientist there last year isolated and analyzed T. Rex DNA(!). They're not cloning or anything, but it their results lend credence to the theory that birds are the closest relatives to dinosaurs.
Okay, it's only one lab, but I think it says a lot about the academic excellence of the university.

|
UNC, NC State, Duke, Meredith, Peace, NCCU...The Triangle of NC is a great place to be. Huge vet school doing all sorts of cutting edge care for animals. Ag program, engineering and architecture. Lots going on there. There's also Appalachian out in Boone, and UNC Wilmington at the coast. The NC state system is one of the best in the U.S.

15. I went through the UC system, and had always heard that |
|
the NC system was on par with or better than the UCal system -- I live in western NC, but haven't been here long and am closer to Atlanta than Raleigh. We're out by WCU and UNCAsheville; the RTP area just seems to have become so congested, but that's more quality of life if you have to drive anywhere rather than a comment on academic quality.

16. Well, the Raleigh traffic is NOTHING compared to Atlanta. |
|
If she wants to minimize that though, UNC might be more to her liking. Free buses all over town. UNC basically IS Chapel Hill. It's a really cool town too. Sort of like Asheville, but the school is much bigger. My kids go to ASU, Boone is pretty nice too.

we get hollered at by Bushies. Very weird. My husband *does* tend to speak his opinion in public places, but we've never been verbally abused anywhere like we have been in Boone. ASU is fantastic, though.

32. I live in Cary, sort of sandwiched in the "elbow" of Raleigh and RTP. This is not traffic. |
|
There IS no traffic (well, for a metro area this size anyway).
Sure, for about an hour (or less) during rush hour, I-40 can get congested. But it moves. Traffic between Raleigh and Durham (I guess to/from RTP in both directions, and from Raleigh), and Hwy 440/US1 (outbound from Raleigh), is the worst. But I've been through it near rush hour and didn't even note anything I would consider traffic.
I don't commute, but that's been my experience. It's laughable when people around here complain about traffic. In our area (high growth), there is a lot of road construction. But they're mostly ahead of the curve, doing it before it's an emergency need, and they do it with minimal interference on traffic.
I'd say if your child is staying on or near campus, anyway, it shouldn't make any difference at all.

but it is quite large, student population wise. She will need to see how she feels about that. Raleigh is a nice town though, lots to do. And of course kids from all the schools go to other towns to visit and socialize. ;-)

21. Good school. Football team sucks. |
|
NC State is one of North Carolina's land-grant colleges (the other is NC A&T State, which is a historically black school), and it's our sea grant college.
Translation: HUGE ag department, really good ocean studies programs.
As for the football team? We're from North Carolina, man; around these parts our colleges play football to pass the time until basketball season starts. They have a nice football stadium, but so does Duke and they've got the worst football team in America. Most high school teams can beat Duke.

but daughter did play collegiate VB. Did it for 2 years, then quit. Will graduate in May, already has a job. Big difference between club and college. The time commitment is huge, bigger in off season than during the season. EVeryone there is and all stater, everyone has been to all the tourneys. We did 3 campus visits, chose the best for her. One lesson, the biggest lesson, don't believe more than 50% of what ANY coach tells you.

where did your daughter do her undergrad, if you don't mind my asking? PM me if you'd prefer, or if you don't want to say, totally fine. My niece is being courted by several schools ... I'm sure a lot of what the coaches tell you is baloney. I know at 18 I'd have been totally overwhelmed by the pressure of college plus athletics at a big school, but that was me, not her.

35. It's a bad idea to go streaking through the brickyards. |
|
 My dad went to NCSU in the 70s when streaking was apparently really popular, and one day he saw some guy streak across the brickyards at full speed, trip, and fall on his face. The momentum kept him going for a few yards, and the guy got scraped up pretty badly in some...sensitive locations. :scared: Other than that, though, I don't know too much about it - I visited the campus back when I was looking at colleges, and it seems to be a pretty nice place. My dad liked it, though, and he's done pretty well career-wise with an NCSU diploma (his major was Parks & Rec. Management, or whatever they're calling it nowadays). Best of luck to your niece, wherever she decides to go! :hi:
