1. Senseless waste of fossil fuels. My rant for the day.
Here's a news bulletin: the supply of oil is NOT infinite. We're going to run out some day.

And seeing a bunch of damn cars driving around an oval, lap after lap after lap after lap, is more than a little disgusting.

3. I'm not a NASCAR apologist
but the entire grid (all the cars) burn less fuel in a 500 mile race than a single 747 during a trans-Atlantic crossing.

6. But it's not just NASCAR
How many auto races are in this country? How many different kinds of auto racing is there?

Auto racing, to me, is an example of ridiculous conspicuous consumption.

That's my opinion. But dammit, it just seems to be immoral. Again, IMO.

11. technology used to develop these race cars directly effects what we drive
a lot of the R & D in the auto industry is done through the various race progams. Advances are ported to the consumer, and that would include fuel efficiency standards.

7. One transatlantic flight spends as much fuel as the entire F1 season
So a dozen couples that spend vacation abroad are more guilty than Michael Schumacher, Scott Dixon and (insert NASCAR champion name here) combined.

I admit I have no sources for the above comparison, but I remember reading. Links would be welcome.

Also, CART runs on non-fossile fuel (methanol). Every race series could be converted to that, or to ethanol. Would limit speeds too. I don't know why the idea isn't more talked about.

in the GTP class. Their car broke with about twenty minutes left in the race, after they had led most of the way (in the rain). Don't underestimate the abilities of NASCAR drivers. Driving door-to-door at 190 per is a lot more difficult than it looks on TV!

5. F1
Formula One! I also like WRC/Rally those guys are nuts and are probably the most highly skilled drivers in all of motorsports.

Personally I find oval racing to be very boring.

13. world rally championship..
those guy are freakin nuts, and arguably the most skilled drivers in the world. Plus, those interviews with Marcus Grönholm are quite entertaining!!

BTW.. I used to be bored by oval racing too. Then I started going to the race up at California Speedway, and developed a new appreciation for the sport. It's not as easy as it would appear.

15. Ovals
I watched plenty of oval races. I don't think that its necessarily "easy" (although its hard to argue that races where the drivers are flat out the entire lap are as challenging as races (oval or road) where they have to at least lift for a corner.) I just don't find watching them to be very interesting.

Yeah Grönholm can be quite funny in his way. I also used to enjoy Mika Häkkinen's interviews, with his dry humor and the sound of crickets chirping in the background ;)

I would like to do the Toyota sponsored Paris-Dakkar race before I die. It's US$100,000 including a truck accommodations, airfare, supplies, and a pit crew, and you get to keep the Land Cruiser they supply you with.

One day...one day...

21. yep, some of those young guns are cute
My husband's a NASCAR fan. I find the races enjoyable to watch sometimes, but most of the fans are so ludicrously stupid I can't stand it. He shakes his head at some of their stupidity.

But Dale Jr. is awfully cute!

12. Destruction Derby!
I've actually been to one and was very amused. The whole event satisfied a primitive part of my brain. It seemed fitting to watch fossil fuel vehicles destroy each other.
