I don't think anyone has a "normal" blood family. Family isn't necessarily who you have blood ties with, though. I think there'd be a lot less angst if people could get over the idea of the nuclear family being the end-all be-all of what family means. I am very big on the idea of a chosen family.

My biological father was basically an asshole sperm donor, I don't consider him my father. The man who mentored me and taught me Wicca? He was more of a father to me than the jerk who knocked up my mom and cheated on her, destroying two marriages in the process. So he's my dad.

When you are the black sheep of the family (or, in my case, the Dark Elf :P), by necessity you find and define family in unusual ways.
