Things/phrases that did not exist 20 years ago.... |
|
ADD/ADHD. My oldest son had this bad. But at the time he was in school (the 80's), the term never entered into any of the endless conversations about his always poor performance in school. It was always "he can't keep his mind on tasks, he gets easily distracted" etc....never did they think it was some kind of mental disorder. I got the kid tutors, private teachers etc and nont one of them siad the words ADD....

I worked in mental health back in the 80's and ADD/ADHD did exist and was treated and diagnosed.
Perhaps what has happened is an increased awareness of it, to the point that it is over diagnosed in some cases?
Dunno, but it was around.

20 years ago, nobody would even admit to this, now the TV is littered with ads about some new pill that can get you riding a harley, going on fabulous vacations and making hotter women than the ones in your life happy.

Both of which I caught myself saying this week.

Back then, how big were hard drives? 50 megs?
And terabytes...
God, I remember in the 1990 Star Trek novel "Doctor's Orders" (#50), in the first part of the book Kirk tells his crew "Starfleet has kindly used this short layover to install an extra eighty terabytes of storage in the Library computers."
I remember because I had to look it up in the dictionary. (yeah, yeah, geek. Not only did I read it on many occasions, I happen to have the book on my bookshelf.)
Now I can get a 1-terabyte hard drive from Best Buy for $280 bucks. $22,400 total.
I think Starfleet can afford that...
