Salmon flavored pill wraps! What an amazing idea!
We tried to pill Chaucer a couple of nights ago. Several band aids and a tube of antibiotic cream later, we realized that it was beyond our abilities to "assist" Chaucer in swallowing a pill. He's big, he's strong and he was PISSED. My sweet kitty turned into a whirling dervish of razor sharp claws rather than swallow that pill.

I called the vet and they told me to come in that they had something that could maybe help...

It smells like three day old fish, it feels like play dough, and it gets molded around the pill. It also works. He thinks it is a big old treat and we have stopped bleeding.

Amazing things, these salmon pill wraps. My hat is off to whoever it was that invented these little gems.

Oh, and Chaucer says thanks too. He had a devil of a time getting the blood off his fur...

1. That is great news!
My kitty has CRF and has been on antibiotics for a bladder infection also--she cries and fights when she gets the medicine...maybe this could work for her also.

Good luck!

2. The Vet Tech told me she uses them with her own cats who are both on regular meds.
She says she's been using them for a while now and it has made life much better for her and her animals. I hated it because my cat actually acted afraid of me after we tried to give him that pill. It just about broke my heart. What I have discovered, is that if I give it to him when he's hungry that pill disguised as a treat goes right down.

I think one of the most difficult things about having pets (of any kind) is that feeling of helplessness when they are sick and can't TELL you what is wrong. You can kind of tell there is a problem--but not exactly where it hurts--ya know? At least stuff like this reduces the stress just a bit, and I'll take whatever help I can get.

CRF is no fun for you or your kitty. I'm sorry you are dealing with it, but it can be managed and you and your kitty can keep on loving each other. If you are interested in finding out about these pill covers/wraps, I'd suggest calling your vet. They have worked like a charm for Chaucer kitty.

Good luck!

4. Kitty is going in for a check-up Monday so I'll ask...she's off the
meds..only has IV fluids now which she tolerates better...but that infection keeps coming back so I'll have to ask since I'll probably have to go to put her on at some point again.

I know what you mean about the cat being afraid. When I pet her she kind of whimpers, assuming something else awful will be done to her!

3. Pill Pockets!
Edited on Sat Feb-09-08 12:50 PM by Whoa_Nelly
Have been using the doggie one for a while for my pooch's 2x/day thyroid meds.

The dog Pill Pocket smells like old, dirty socks, but she scoops it up along with her kibble.

The kitty Pill Pockets come in two flavors.

Pill Pockets can be found at pet stores and most vets' offices

5. I hadn't considered needing one for a dog.
My Lab was nuts about cheese so I'd wrap her meds in a bit of cheese and she'd wag and beg for more. (I also hid them in a slice of hot dog on occasion but that was not terribly often.) It never occurred to me that a dog would be difficult to pill. Wow.

Anyhow, that is exactly the product and I am loving it for making my cat happier. The one thing i have noticed is that you have to use whatever hand did NOT touch the pill to mold the stuff around the pill, otherwise the cat sits and sniffs it a bit. (I can't imagine having that acute sense of smell...)

6. Oh, what a good idea!
We have a new dog we adopted from a rescue group, who needed an antibiotic when we brought her home. My Rat Terrier just inhales her food (very little chewing involved), so I thought the new pup would swallow the capsules if I coated them in cheese or peanut butter. Turns out she's a dainty little girl who actually chews and would always spit out the capsule.

The only way I could give it to her was to open the capsule and mix the contents with wet cat food.

I am surprised that your vet didn't give you a liquid antibiotic for Chaucer, though. That is quite easy to squirt into the kitty's mouth.
