Will George HW's funeral be as much of a media frenzy and lie machine as Reagan's was? |
|
For some reason I was just thinking of this.
I have a feeling it won't be, since Reagan - though he totally didn't deserve it - has a HUGE mythological aura around him as the savior president by far too many people.
Clearly, HW doesn't have that aura. In fact, it seems we rarely hear anything about his presidency - we hear about Reagan's or Clinton's, but HW gets pretty much nothing.
But on the other hand, America has slowly been turning into a bizarrely nostalgic and dead-person-worshipping culture. Considering the number of people just here on DU who think it's wrong to say anything critical of a dead person and who go fucking nutso when we call an evil person an evil person instead of cutting out our hearts in their memory, I wouldn't be surprised if HW had a great big national to-do.
That said, though, I still think his funeral - and even Dubya's, eventually - will be quite subdued in comparison to Reagan's great big blow job of national mourning extravaganza which so quickly left the realm of appropriateness into the realm of utter nutjobbery and sinful excess.
What think you? Quiet funeral (as quiet as a president's can be, I mean, of course) or great big rightwing Jesus Crispy ashes and sackcloth obscenity we saw with Reagan?

1. I'm thinking cross between Ford and Truman with the added twist of his Monkey Offspring |
|
also having been President, and then people will talk mostly about how unpopular both of these inbred Vienna Sausage Dick assholes were. And there will probably be a lot of talk about how these two amoeba-men got us inextricably tied up with Iraq. I mean, with his son being such a massive screw up, there will have to be a lot of talk about the Chimperor, and that will dim any bright recollections of Poppy. So, no big Reagan send-off.

fanfare. But the son's will be the most modest of all. It will have to be held at an undisclosed location, and he'll have to be unceremoniously lowered into the ground in an unmarked plot to thwart the teeming masses who will be anxious to line up to piss on his grave.

6. Since Reagan left office |
|
the RWers have been busy deifying him - renaming everything possible to Reagan: Reagan National Airport, Reagan schools, parks, etc...
Even the slightest bit of criticism was met with an overwhelming roar of pushback.
Every poll about presidents in history was Freeped for Reagan to no end (partly because, well, they got nobody else...) while our side split out votes between FDR, JFK and Clinton.
They will not be doing the same for Bush.

we'll still be waiting a loooong time for Boosh the first's funeral. I'll ignore it the way I ignored Raygun's funeral. Just not interested.

I don't think George H.W. Bush has the slavishly devoted fan-base that Reagan did. I suspect he'll get the requisite amount of fuss and not much more.
