Minor relationship advice needed |
|
OK, my girlfriend has been lusting after a ceiling lamp for her living room for over a year. She finally went ahead and spent the money, got it installed and she's just over the moon about it.
The problem is that, now that I've seen it, I think it's ugly as fuck. And for some unknown reason, she really respects my opinion on her home decor.
Should I tell her I hate it?

6. It certainly will ruin her enjoyment of it, but she always insists she wants my honest opinion |
|
Unfortunately, my honest opinion is pretty depressing. She spent a LOT of money on it and it looks like something she fished out of the dumpster at Good Will. The color and style are wrong for the room and it hangs way too low, making you feel like you constantly need to duck.
When I saw it, I really had to try hard to hide how appalled I was. She doesn't often buy herself things like this, so I really don't want to ruin her fun. On the other hand, I want to respect her desire for honesty.

5. Well, I don't really approve of relationships with minors... |
|
...and, imho, lusting after ceiling lamps is just wrong, but who am I to judge?
What was the question again? :P

7. Let her catch you doing the yummy with the lamp when she comes home. |
|
She won't be able to get rid of it fast enough.

9. Be honest but not brutal. |
|
Something on the order of what bi_baby said. If it means a lot to her it's the kindest way to handle it, but you need not be pretend that you like it either. It's a fine line.

12. Thanks for all the advice. Here's what I think I'm going to do |
|
I'm going to give it a week. My first impression could soften, or I could just decide I was wrong. But if I still hate it after a week, I'm going to cop to it. I don't think there's a choice -- I'm a pretty bad actor and I really, really think it's fugly.
Thanks again for the help. :grouphug:

13. If she asks, tell her the truth. by all means |
|
but if she DOESN'T ask....what she doesn't know won't hurt her. :D
Hell, it doesn't have to "hurt" her, anyway.
You're allowed to have differences in taste, for heaven's sake.
Variety is the spice of life, as they say.
My two cents. :hi:
