Oscars! Any DU film fans? |
|
My hub is an Academy voter & snagged some cheap seats at the Kodac tonight -- very grateful that my 17 y/o daughter wanted to go so bad as I would not want to be getting ready right now with the wind & rain etc!
17 y/o's look nice windblown or not, I am ever more easily disheveled in my middle age....
Anyhow I have my fingers crossed for George Clooney & Ellen Page -- but I liked all the films so much this year that I would be happy with almost any result.
One thing that is cool, my hub is on the nom comittee for the shorts branch, did you know you can get all the nommed shorts on ITunes now?? There were some great ones this year, highly recommended!

1. I'm a film fan, but I hate the Oscars. |
|
Actually, I think I hate the Oscars BECAUSE I'm a film fan.

Everybody hates them, LOL! I don't....I love them! I do think that a lot of good films get more notice because of them. For sure the docs, shorts, foreign films etc. I went to the shorts screening last Tues and it was completely sold out, the directors of the shorts were there, it was really cool. Truly in that category it is a big deal to get nommed because the nom alone means soooo many more people will see the movie!

8. My biggest complaint is that it rarely awards the most worthy films/actors/directors |
|
And often ignores them completely. It costs a fortune just to campaign to be nominated to begin with, so that in and of itself limits the playing field to mostly big names. This year I will admit the Best Picture category is pretty good, though.

11. I do think all the nommed films are worthy..... |
|
There's always one that I think gets stiffed....would have liked "Control" to be up for SOMETHING and Darjeeling for cinematography.

16. Control... the Anton Corbjin-directed flick? |
|
When is that finally to be released to DVD... any idea? I was sick that it never ran anywhere near here (3 1/2 hrs to DC to go to the movies would have been a bit much)

15. It's All Subjective Anyway |
|
This year's best picture group is a very tasty little bunch and, for a change, offers several films that have mass appeal. Or would, if they were marketed well.

I will probably watch just for George Clooney or Johnny Depp. They both deserve one.
edit: I think it's neat that your hubby is a voter and can go to the ceremony. :D

6. I'll never forget 2003 Oscars where George Clooney was so courageous |
|
Honestly people forget how much pressure there was to "not say anything negative" about the impending invasion of Iraq. He (and Michael Moore of course) were a couple of the few who didn't follow orders. The whole area outside the theater was packed with freepers with these wacky signs about John Wayne and all that shit. That was such a great moment when Michael Moore won and we were some of the many people in the balconies giving him a standing O -- but then on the news saw that he was booed. I still think the booing was a set-up....I couldn't hear it from where I was sitting.

on the TV to be honest with you. I didn't hear it at all until they pointed it out as "booing" on the incessant replays.

13. To be honest, the before-the-show part is the fun part |
|
They have a great open bar and Wolfgang Puck goodies to lure the rank & file in early so the red carpet doesn't have us "normals" on it approaching showtime -- what is fun is to watch the interviews on the widescreen in the lobby & then watch them walk in the door!
Once the show starts though, it's a little torturous for me, always too long and more fun to watch in your jammies from home than up at the nosebleed section where we always sit!
My daughter is a huge Jon Stewart fan and hoping to get up the nerve to shake his hand in the lobby.....I'm always too nervous to go up to anybody famous, myself!

9. I really liked "Michael Clayton," and am rooting for Clooney and Swinton |
|
It's probably true that Tilda Swinton is the only one with a chance at Oscar, but I would really like to see the film get some recognition. A real adult movie, with no graphic violence or sex - what a relief in this day and age. I just enjoyed the hell out of it.

10. Loved the Hitchcock-quality suspense in that film! |
|
Not easy to do! It is kind of an understated role and the more flamboyent ones usually win, but the competition is so even, that GC might pull it out. I know 2 acad voters who voted for GC!
