Which cartoon started the talking dog tradition. |
|
Seems like cartoons that have people (as opposed to anthromorphic animals) often have talking dogs. Astro from the Jetsons, Scooby-Doo, Goober and the Ghost-Chasers and most recently, Brian from Family Guy. Variations on this idea include, Claus the talking fish from American Dad and Jabber-Jaw the talking shark.
So which cartoon started the trend of talking dogs? Was it the Jetsons?

1. There was a cartoon character called Droopy that was from the 50's, I think. |

And Droopy featured humans as well as anthroporphic animals.
I was going to suggest Disney's Goofy, but IIRC he's mostly in a "Furries" universe and so doesn't answer the OP's question.

...was he a personified mouse in a world of other personified mice?

6. What about cartoon strips? |
|
Or are only referring to actually hearing a human sounding voice?

7. While my sentimental favorite is Astro, talking dogs go back to the beginning |

As others have alluded, the philosphical question is: Are we talking about cartoon dogs that are cast as dogs (i.e. Astro, Brian, Scooby, Spike (Warner Brothers); or do we include anthropomorphic characters that just happen to be dogs (i.e. Goofy, Droopy, Huckleberry, Augie Doggie and Doggie Daddy)?
Note that in some episodes, Goofy (the anthropomorphic dog) owned Pluto (the 'dog' dog). Pluto did not talk. Is this internally consistent? Use both sides of paper if necessary.

10. Goofy and Pluto were just on a serious Dominance/Obedience relationship. |
|
In some of the original cartoons Pluto can be seen with a ball gag in his mouth.
