So, he's going broke feeding WILD birds, and he wants people to start footing the bill for him? I wonder if he begs for money in the subways to give to other beggars...

3. Feed the birds...tuppence a bag... |
|
Early each day to the steps of Saint Paul's The little old bird woman comes. In her own special way to the people she calls, "Come, buy my bags full of crumbs. Come feed the little birds, show them you care And you'll be glad if you do. Their young ones are hungry, Their nests are so bare; All it takes is tuppence from you." Feed the birds, tuppence a bag, Tuppence, tuppence, tuppence a bag. "Feed the birds," that's what she cries, While overhead, her birds fill the skies. All around the cathedral the saints and apostles Look down as she sells her wares. Although you can't see it, you know they are smiling Each time someone shows that he cares. Though her words are simple and few, Listen, listen, she's calling to you: "Feed the birds, tuppence a bag, Tuppence, tuppence, tuppence a bag."

I first did it as a way to balance the french fries they were getting from the nearby McD's. I figured they were going to be in close proximity to people, so the least I could do was feed them something healthy. The CDC guy that comes around told me it was the healthiest flock he'd seen.
Later I started studying and could locate certain family groups and how they interacted socially. I've been doing that ever since with a couple of filmcans of birdseed.

The pigeons are like kudzu here. And they are a real nuisance when they decide to take up residence in my eaves.

My mother feeds them tons of food and there were so many standing on the power line that it broke. The neighbors were not pleased. And she's still doing it.
The suits get mad at me, but the CDC is glad I'm taking an interest. It's actually pretty interesting. I've noticed certain behaviors in how pigeons correct youngsters, and I've been able to isolate certain dominant and recessive genetic patterns. I've also noticed that when they pair off, each parent cares for the young. After the young one can fend for itself, each parent moves on to a different mate.
However, some males and some females have same sex "running buddies". It seems they are bonded pairs.

I think they're pretty and whenever I've lived in/visited cities I've fed them a little. Now they come in my yard and eat my bird food sometimes and I feed some whenever I go to Dupont Circle in DC.
None have ever depended on me though, I moved around too much. Now that I'm in one place I have more sparrows and robins.

I don't give them much. Right now, there's a beautiful albino dove outside that I believe escaped from someone's house. I've noticed that he's dehydrated, he's losing weight, and he has no clue whatsoever about what to do outside.
Plus, the flock has rejected him and have opened up bloody gashes on his head that weren't there yesterday. I'm assuming he tried to roost with them to get out of the cold and the very strong winds.
I've tried to catch him and failed 3 times. He's so hungry though that he keeps coming back for more.
I've got one at home now that got zapped by the wire the hospital put across the ledge to keep pigeons from nesting. He's getting better day to day. I pretty much just want to nurse the wounds, allow them to regain their strength and let them go in appropriate places. I think the white one would do well in a garden area.

He'll be lucky if you can catch him, I bet he'd be easy to help out if you could just get him moved.
I've saw a parakeet at my birdfeeder sometimes (I guess last summer was the last time) who looked like he was doing just fine, I guess he's all alone though.. and this was months ago :(

19. There's a LOT of feral parakeets |
|
For some stupid reason, people think domesticated birds will do just fine if they let them go once they tire of them. Most starve to death. Some manage to survive and there's usually a small nesting colony.
We've had a couple come to our bird feeder and we even had a ring-necked dove.
So far, it looks like the white dove got his fill of pigeon food and is hiding out somewhere. When he gets hungry again, I'll try again. It's supposed to get below freezing tonight. I thought I had a good hold on him one time. :grr:
I just had a thought. I wonder if it's a white dove that was released for a wedding? They usually meet a bad end.

It makes me ill every time I see it. I haven't seen it in person because I'd go ballistic.
Do you remember the Olympics where they released live doves? I don't remember which Olympics that was, but the poor birds were so disoriented that they flew directly into the cauldron flames. x(

Every time I go to Chicago to see HuggyBear (:P), I try to find something to toss for the pigeons. They're so cute. :loveya: And they're kind of a novelty to me... we don't have many in central Ohio. :P
