Bought flour lately?
Our grocery was out of all-purpose tonight. They said there's been a run on flour.

13. I'd love the recipe, too....

I really don't like to buy much "finished" food at the store anymore - so many preservatives and high-fructose-corn syrup pumped into damn near everything.

I'm going to try to start growing some of our food this spring - veggies, mostly. I think it'd be a good idea for everyone who has some space to do so b/c I think the price of food is going to skyrocket. Grow your own, and buy only local, in-season produce so you don't have to deal with the fuel surcharge (with the added benefit being that you're helping local farmers and not contributing to the trucking of veggies 2000+ miles for an odorless, tasteless tomato (or whatever)).

2. Making bread is easy, fun and cheap.
I make it in the Cuisinart food processor. I have one that's big enough to hold 6 cups of flour.

And it's always better than storebought.

3. But I need flour!
And they didn't have any. I can't bake bread without flour.

4. Yeah, there's been talk of shortage.
A global shortage. There are predictions that prices will rise sharply.

5. I've heard that too.
It sounds like everything made with wheat will be skyrocketing.

9. I've been stocking up on flour the last couple of weeks.
I haven't seen a big increase in prices or a lack of product, but I'm sure that won't last if wheat prices keep going up.

12. Not wheat flour
I'm looking for wheat alternatives, because I'm wheat sensitive.

And alternative breads are really expensive anyway. So "bread" is going to be an occasional treat for me.

14. Just wheat or gluten?
Spelt subs really well for wheat in most baked goods, but it's got gluten so it doesn't work for people with celiac, etc.

15. It's the gluten
I tried spelt and had the same problems as with wheat.

So, I'm looking for other things like nut flours.

16. just asked my husband about a shortage (he works in the foodservice industry)
he says there is a huge shortage going on, a bag (50lbs) of King Arthur is going for 44 bucks! When I left the foodservice 16 months ago, it was about 15 bucks for a 50lb bag. :wow:

No relief until the next harvest is in.

18. first I've heard of this...
weird, was there some problem with the wheat harvest?

Or is it that so much of it is sent elsewhere?

19. As best as I understand it
We're growing less wheat to make more room for ethanol-producing corn.
