Tell us 5 things DU doesn't know about you.
And for those DUers who've been here for a Brazillion years and told all: Tell us 5 things that DU hasn't been told about you in a while.

My 5:

  • I studied ballet for 14 years,
  • I never learned to swim,
  • my mother was a classically trained professional chef,
  • I'm a slavishly devoted LOST addict,
  • I'm romantically involved with a British guy

Now it's your turn. :hi:

4. Hmm... done this a few times so I'm not sure what I have left to say. :)
Despite being interested in gaming, and even being an amateur gamemaker myself both with tabletop RPGs and video games... I never owned a Nintendo, Sega or SNES as a kid, and I've never played Dungeons and Dragons.

I draw damn good stick figures.
Seriously.

Despite the fact that I try to eat healthy, I can't STAND tofu.

I paid my way through several years of college while working at a pizza place. And yes, I can do the throwing-the-dough-in-the-air-and-spinning-it thing. :)

I started reading Hardy Boys and Nancy Drew books in 1st grade.

I can't count to five.

Also, it's probably why you vote Democrat. ;)

164. Mostly it shows that the way they do student loans is kinda stupid.
They took my parents' finances into account to some extent... but seemed to ignore the fact that we had three kids in college and one still at home when I left. And because I was under 23, they just EXPECTED my parents to help me out as much as possible. Even though they really couldn't. They could only spare a couple hundred a year, and if they had a little extra they'd be able to help with rent now and then but that wasn't often. I think they ended up paying one month's rent a semester the first couple years, then I started working and I didn't need as much so it went down to about one month's rent a year. :P

1) I was a Girl Scout from second grade on and I earned my First Class Award my junior year in high school. Jimmy Carter even sent me a congratulatory letter!

2) My mother started me on swimming lessons when I was 2, and at 16, I was the youngest person in NC (at least at the time) to earn my Water Safety Instructor (WSI) certificate. I was a lifeguard for several summers. :)

3) I love to drive a five-speed car and cannot STAND to drive an automatic. :) My five-speed gets 40 MPG.

4) I'm a LOST addict too...but then most everyone here already knows that. :P

5) I spent most of the summer of 1983 (my junior year in college) in Hawaii. :)

Bonus: I am a huge science fiction and comic nerd. :P

The best news story in years....

Man held for German 'cannibal killing'

A man has confessed to murdering and eating another man who allegedly volunteered to be killed, in a case that has shocked Germany.

Neighbour Joerg Paulusen, speaking to Reuters TV, said of the killer: "It was sort of clear to us that he had a different perspective on life than we did, but he was a normal person, to speak to him, drink a glass of beer with him - just like you and me."

90. I hope there is more to the creation of this behavior than just having an uncle play
a game where he pretends to be a flesh-eating giant. Was a nerve switched on right then? I find this stuff rather fascinating even though I end up spooked if I read too much of it.

"Sagawa told the programme makers he had been obsessed with cannibalism from the age of three, when his uncle used to play a game pretending to be a flesh-eating giant."

19. Let's see...
I have almost every word of Henry V memorized.

I was once publicly insulted by Alistair Cooke (nasty man!).

I didn't learn to drive a manual transmission until I was 31 (and will now drive nothing else).

While I'm possibly one of the most accident-prone people you'll encounter, I've never had a stitch (scars notwithstanding) or a broken bone. This amazes my family.

I make a transcendant creme brulee.

I'd add the bit about Character Assassin, but most of y'all know about that now, so it doesn't count.

Edited on Tue Mar-04-08 05:51 PM by socialdemocrat1981
That's interesting. I only started reading Alistair Cooke's contributions about a year or two before his passing when I discovered them on BBC online -I honestly didn't know whom he was before then (despite being a supposedly intelligent and well-read 20-year old at the time, his name somehow escaped me). While I realized that he was supposed to be a literary icon of some sort, I'll be frank and say that the columns that I read of his didn't impress me that much because I found him quite sympathetic toward the Bush Administration and its policies.

It was only after his passing that I gained a greater appreciation for his life and works

...on a speech he'd given the night before (he was at the local university (1985-ish) to deliver a series of lectures). It was the most innocuous story (following a deadly dull, rambling speech, quite honestly). He spent the first 15 minutes of his lecture time the next day calling me a number of names (yet backhandedly complimenting my writing). He also assumed I was a male, which was irritating (my first name is Robin).

All my fellow media colleagues who were lined up on the front row with me--Cooke obviously had no clue I was sitting 10 feet away from him the whole time--were giving me sidelong :wtf: looks. It was beyond bizarre.

But it was also rude and nasty, and I disliked him ever since. ;-)

80. that's kind of sad
I listened to his "letter from america" for years, and usually really enjoyed it. Sure, he seemed like a bit of a pompous ass, but one with a knack for explaining things about the world in a straightforward way with common language. I found the segment to be quite soothing, and was really sad when he stopped making it and died a few months later. Sucks that he sucked in real life.

1. Two of my poems were published in an anthology when I was only 15 years old. (Print, real book, famous German publisher, mind you. I'm not talking about Myspace or e-books.)

2. If I'd followed my early political career stubbornly, I might be a socialist senator by now. (Colleague of mine could call himself 'President' for a while.)

3. I've shot my mom in the foot. --------------------- Well, after the darn bullet went through my leg first. She was sitting next to me when it went 'Boom!' I spent two weeks in the same hospital room with her. Oh, on edit: It was her Birthday. So there's the joke: 'Happy Birthday, Mom! BANG!'

4. I'm coming from a family of artists and can't draw. Everyone else can, I can't. And I'd love to be able to.

5. I drank Vodka out of hotel bathroom glasses with some Sowjet Komsomols at 9 a. m., after being interviewed by them. I puked later. They started with beer at 8 a. m., while I had coffee first.

3. I really suck at managing my own money, but I kept track of the books for a job I used to have like it was second nature.
4. I majored in English in college, yet I still make grammar mistakes!
5. The middle fingers on each of my hands is crooked at the second knuckle. I'm not sure if it's a genetic thing, or if I hurt myself at some point during my childhood and blocked the memory.

1. I failed calculus the first time I took it in college but eventually earned a master's degree in science and did well in courses on multivariable statistics and other advanced math.

2. The guy sitting next to me when I failed calculus in college went on to be a famous NFL player and remembered me by name when I met him again decades later.

3. I failed my first driver's ed test but learned to drive stick shift a year later and have never driven anything else since.

4. I almost failed my high school typing class but went on to earn a living as a writer and can now type damn fast (accurate too except on DU, on which I never fail to include at least one embarrassing typo on every post).

5. I didn't know that I'm a lesbian until I was 45 and had been married almost 25 years.

I used this talent to win contests as a kid--spelling bees, geography bees, and even a church youth contest to see who could recite all 66 books of the Bible in order.

The sight of other people's blood, in real life, not in movies or my own blood, automatically makes me vomit.

From birth till age 2, the Doctors thought I had leukemia or some weird blood disorder, and I had to get my blood tested every few weeks for 2 years, approx. They were wrong.

When I lived around the corner from a McDo, I was 5, and I convinced the workers that I was poor and my parents didn't feed me, so they would give me apple pies...and I don't even like apple pie!

I hated cheese until about age 20, now it's my favorite food, pretty much.

I came *this* close to drowning, and subsequently dying at age 4. B/c of that, I didn't learn to swim until age 18. I love swimming now.

held every year in Pennsylvania by members of the Society for Creative Anachronism (SCA). SCA are medieval recreationists, with a dose of fantasy added in - some members are as historically accurate as they can possibly manage, while others are just there to play.

Some of the best photos of Pennsic and War Practice (held at the same place as Pennsic) are by a gentleman named Ron Lutz, who is, I believe, from the Pittsburgh area:

http://www.pbase.com/darter02/sca

Parties at Pennsic and War Practice are legendary, and folks heading out to the battlefield for some late-night fun is not an uncommon occurance. ;-)

345. Well, I'm sorry to hear that
All I can say is that the SCA is an international organization with thousands and thousands of members. Most of the ones I've personally interacted with have been good people. A few have not. In my experience, it has pretty much mirrored other groups of similar size as far as the mix of people who participate.

Also, the society has changed a great deal from its early days, and it is in some ways a different organization now than it was when I joined in 1997. One of the biggest changes I've witnessed is the effort that's been made to include and protect children who participate in SCA activities. Several years ago, new officer positions were created at the local, regional and corporate levels to specifically oversee children's activities at SCA events. And more recently, the society has begun requiring background checks for all persons holding offices where they directly interact with children (this includes children's officers and youth weapons marshals).

Finally, I should point out that Mr. Shragger's crimes were committed at his residence, not at an official SCA function, and the news reports I've read stated that the SCA cooperated fully with authorities in that case.

And although I didn't read Gone With the Wind in third grade (didn't have a copy available), I *did* read Lord of the Rings for the first time.

I went to Westmoreland Elementary/Middle School, then Vinson HS.

I didn't read Lord of the Rings until 5th grade, but then I reread it again and again for like a whole year. So I guess that would be #6: I'm a Lord of the Rings expert lol.

Just out of curiosity, does your SN have anything to do with the beverage mead, or is it something else? I'm an amateur brewer, 's why I ask. :)

246. Its actually a combination
of the name I use in SCA and my fiancee's last name. I figured between the two, people who actually know me outside the Internet might be able to recognize me online.

I love some good mead, though. :D I mentioned Pennsic upthread. One year at Pennsic, I was invited to a party in a camp where everyone was a mead brewer. It was basically the night they were tasting all the mead that everyone had made. Yummy!

Other than that, the best mead I've ever had was some that was imported from Ireland (I don't know what brand.) Around here, usually the best you can do commercially is Chaucer's, which imo doesn't suck as a beverage but isn't what I consider really good mead.

Thanks for the Lounge welcome. I fled here from GD-P and other scary places. :P

252. Heh... funny that you say that.
WORST mead I ever tasted was imported from Ireland. :P Not even real mead, just white wine with honey added. Which normally I'd let slide and just call it a pyment... but the honey was added AFTER the wine had fermented. The honey was completely unfermented. Which, IMO, does not give them the right to call it mead.

Also, it was really nasty white wine to begin with.

Chaucer's was my first, and if I can't find anything else I'll settle for it. But the main reason I started brewing my own was so that I wouldn't have to settle anymore. :)

My girlfriend won tickets to a Duran Duran concert. And then she won a second set with backstage passes, but since you can't win two contests on the radio so close together, she had to put the backstage pass tickets in my name.

Also, she wanted her childhood friend to get a chance to go backstage and meet her idol - the drummer, Roger. So she gave the passes to us with me having the mission to get John Taylor's autograph. I was so zoned in on John Taylor, that when Simon jumped in front of me ready to sign something, I waved him on and said,"that's okay, you can go to the next person".

Well, my girlfriend could have KILLED me for not getting Simon's autograph too. But I did get John Taylor's!

Edited on Tue Mar-04-08 10:25 PM by SOteric
I had some problems with my hips, knees and ankles owing to a previous illness. A physical therapist had to spend some time changing the way I walk just to ease some of the discomfort. It was amazing the difference it made. I suppose we all just assume if we're upright and going forward, we must be walking.

P.S. - About #5, - better than being a dumbass, dude. Seriously. ;)

(walking) The first thing the woman said to me was, "how much do you spend on shoes?" She was appalled when I told her that I bought cheap shoes. Good shoes really do make a difference (I was having horrible pain in my knee), but I don't always (ok, hardly ever) do the stretches that I'm supposed to, and the weird hip problem I have that's causing all of this I'm pretty sure is caused by the position I sleep in. I can try to learn how to walk again, but I'll be damned if I have to relearn how to sleep.

140. Okay.
Every school I went to from Kindergarten through high school closed right after my class had "graduated".

I was a "rink rat" and spent every Friday and Saturday night at the local roller rink during my teens.

I love hats.

I was flat chested until I was 20. Then the boobie fairy decided to over abundantly bless me. (My DDs are all natural).

I love to go to the drive in movies.

153. My infamous 5... prepare to be shocked!
1.) At age 16, i was expelled from a FundieBaptist-run high school. The reason?! I went to a J. Geils Band concert, and the school's rules explicitly threatened expulsion for any student who attended a "rock concert, lounge, or discotheque".

2.) I had my first intimate experiences with members of either sex within a week of each other; one a few days before my 18th birthday, the other a few days after. None on my birthday itself, though *pout*

3.) Two of my tattoos were done by the same artist who did the huge dragon on Jani Lane from Warrant. He introduced us at an after-concert party, because he wanted to show off his work to each other!

4.) I have an older half-brother (8 years older) whom i have never met in person; we've only spoken a couple of times by letter or phone. The last time was 15 years ago.

5.) The only instrument i play competently is the trombone. I once tried to learn to play bass guitar, but the only thing i remember now is how to pick out the "Munsters" theme.

I was always designated driver when I was a teen and young adult - I was the only responsible one of my friends.

    1. I knit, crochet, and embroider every single day, at least one of those. I cannot watch television or movies without a craft in my hands.

    2. I was pulled onstage and kissed on the mouth by Rob Zombie at the Trocadero in Philly, in the La Sexorcisto White Zombie days. It was AWESOME.

    3. I was also kissed on the mouth by Matthew Sweet on his tour bus behind the Bottle and Cork in Dewey Beach, Delaware. Unfortunately, he was in one of his "fat" phases. Not so awesome.

    4. I maintained a 4.0 GPA at my Ivy League University.

    5. When I was 29, I had my tubes tied. No, I have no children.

    233. I didn't speak English till I was 6
Edited on Wed Mar-05-08 04:41 PM by LiberalEsto
My parents wanted me to speak Estonian at home, so when I started kindergarten, I started learning English by total immersion. BTW, I was born in the US, and they spoke fluent English.

One of my great-grandfathers was a Russian Orthodox priest.

    I took a belly-dancing class when I was 20.

I was a member of the Citizens Party in the late 1970s-early 1980s.

    I'm addicted to sudoku puzzles.

Oh, I almost forgot, I met all of the Grateful Dead back in 1971 - before they were famous - including Pig Pen. Got to go backstage at a couple of concerts.

    239. OK, some of it may be weird
    1. I have worked with all men for 15 years (I have not cycled right for a decade and a half because of it)

    2. I am the most amazing amateur gardner. My containers are legend. I can also design flowers and can wrap packages in ways that can make you cry over the beauty. I have actually wrapped on request empty boxes just to put under people's trees in this day of gift cards, and I love doing it (I have never charged a single dime)

    3. I maintain, tend, plant and care for all the gravestones of my relatives in currently 7 different cemeteries, and am planning a trip to Pleasants County WVA to replace (not really replace but supplement with a new stone and/or plaque) two stones there this summer. My summer trip is planned for Rosanna Barnhart, wife of Aca Barnhart (actually Asa). She was my gggg grandmother. If you scroll down on this page, you can click to see her stone as it is now. http://www.lindapages.com/pleasants/cemetery/brnhrt.htm

    4. I am deeply, madly in love with my best friend. My husband was love at first site 20 years ago in a Kroger parking lot on St. Patrick's day (20 years coming up soon!)

    5. I am a Bravo TV addict and a cooking gadget junkie, and also a family history buff and know the history of my families through many hundreds of years.

    285. I will probably leave that stone alone as much as possible
those stones some apart in sheets, and I can tell that toughing it will damage it more. What I will do is clean up around it, plant a few casual and hardy perennials, and put in either another carved stone or a plaque (depending on what that county's/township's cemetery rules allow) I am trying to get the clarification.

What I want is people to be able to see her name in another 150 years,l because this stone is finished. Somewhere in there is her hubby also, but no stone...we will be putting that on the marker as well.

    • I've been a Dodgers fan since I was 9, but I've never been to Dodger Stadium.

    • I have, however, been to more than 500 minor league baseball games.

    • A minor league pitcher named Jeff Nelson got married on the field before a game in 1987. I was the photographer; it was the first wedding I shot. He went on to a 15-year major league career, mostly with Seattle and the Jankees, and was an All-Star in 2001 — which is weird, because he sucked that year in A Ball. (He and Colette are still married, btw.)

    • I've seen "Monty Python and the Holy Grail" more than 50 times.

    • I had my first panic attack when I was 11, while pitching a Little League game, and became agoraphobic at 19.

    257. Here I go
-I was a big baby. I was 10 lbs, 1 month premature. My mom almost miscarried me when she was around 3 months pregnant, and was then bed ridden for the remainder of her pregnancy. Her entire ordeal included being put on medication almost giving her a heart attack, taking blood products that could have given her AIDS, and having her blood poisoned.

My mom did not have a C-section, and she's convinced that if she was in the US at the time rather than France, I'd either have been miscarried or she'd have a C-section scar.

-I was born in France, still a French citizen, but I've never been back since I left when I was 6 months old.

-I'm half French, half Afghani, and I can't speak French or Farsi/Pashto/etc. fluently. Also I'm neither Catholic nor Muslim.

-If you asked me to ride a bike, I'd probably fall off. The same hold true for skates/blades.

-I'll eat anything, for there are very few foods I wouldn't try. The only foods I don't bother touching are some varieties of Indian cooking (Indian cooking can be fucking disgusting) and shellfish that looks like mutated snot (mussels, oysters, etc.).

    I'm left-handed.

I was essentially a hobo/tramp/whatever for 3 years in the late 80's/early 90's and have pretty much seen every corner of the US from a boxcar, save New England.

I was a working musician for 10+ years.

I worked for Dennis Kucinich as a 13 year-old volunteer when he was running for Mayor of Cleveland in the mid 70's.

I've logged more miles on a Greyhound Bus than most Greyhound drivers.

    I don't drive.

    3. I love to quote from my favorite movies to the point where it annoys the hell out of you... and then, it goes sooo much further.

    4. I cannot dance... at all. I have tried... it doesn't end well.

    5. I sing, whether or not I sing well depends upon who you ask. I do a great impression of a dying cat on the saxophone.

    315. No one ever reads this far below
    1. Both of my grandparents got to see Mahatma Gandhi in person before they were married. My grandfather also met India's first Prime Minister Nehru. This is all the more remarkable because neither of them lived in India and I believe they only visited India after the two figures in question had died.
    2. Roald Dahl (Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, Matilda, the Witches etc) visited my school and addressed our school assembly approximately one year before he passed away
    3. Quite a few of my relatives who are now deceased wrote the last letter of their lives to me
    4. Despite being a child of the '80s', I had a childhood more reminiscent of the '50s' -it was perfectly safe for kids to wonder around unsupervised and to have adventures exploring empty houses and empty drains. We also had a massive garden that even contained a huge jungle at the back. We lived in an exclusive expatriate neighborhood in SE Asia for the first ten years of my life. I wish I could go back to those days -you never realize how good you had it until it was gone (not that I didn't love my life in those days but I wish I could have appreciated it more)

    1) I can't wink. Honest.

    2) I provided "refreshments" to lots of bands that toured the mid-west in the late 60's/very early 70's.

    3) I hitch-hiked across the U.S. twice.

    4) The rock band I was in opened for a really big act act in '69 - but they weren't that big then. (Sorry, I ain't fessing up) :)

    5) I don't like to be on boats if I can't see land.

    3. I'm terrible at keeping track of things.

    4. I rarely watch movies -- downloading TV shows is more my bag.

    5. I like dogs, but refuse to own one, because I don't do the whole "dominance" thing. I'd rather have a cat.

    • I missed school for a Gore rally in 2000.
    • I was in marching band for four years.
    • I am a Democratic precinct delegate.
    • My house is roughly 40 years old.
    • My grandma's friend lives (or at least used to live) in Davis, WV. In 2001 my family and I visited her and even took a tour of sorts through her mother's worn-down house in the town of Coketon.

I'm a supermodel, I've negotiated peace treaties between warring enemies, and I'm a big fucking liar who makes random shit up.
