Which Liberal stereotype are you?
I'm rich. I surrender alot as well. I probably look French too.

Actually, I'm probably more Republican stereotype than anything. I'm a hick from Montana and I say "Nukular." Yikes. But people seem to want to have a beer with me.....

Edited on Thu Mar-06-08 12:52 AM by Kutjara
...who spent long enough living abroad to pick up a Eurotrash accent, a superior attitude, and a taste for hopeless far-left politics. I work in a nebulous part of the technology industry, doing a job that's impossible to describe, while spending my offtime in coffee houses, reading cubic philosophy tomes of migraine-inducing pretension. Finally, I only vote for candidates who have no hope of ever being elected, meaning I'll never have my utopian principles put to the test.

16. Just your typical boomer/gen-xer cusper...
shattered idealist, ex-farmer, professional engineer type who has lost all hope of real political change and happens to believe that for every complex problem, there is an answer that is clear, simple--and wrong, choosing instead to hang out here when he's not working on Mr. Fusion in his garage and who only recently found out that someone made a documentary of his senior year in high school and called it Dazed and Confused but is now an ex-stoner, ex-boozer and hasn't touched a peyote button in 25 years but just can't manage to quit the tobacco, who has never read Susan fucking Sontag, believes in opening presents Christmas Eve so parents can sleep in Christmas morning, that Lee Harvey was part of a vast conspiracy and while the small of a woman's back is nice and all, the front is much more interesting. In short, he finds arguing politics akin to tilting at windmills which is why he hangs out in the Lounge cracking himself up while downloading midget clown porn and when it comes time to vote, he simply finds the biggest idiot he can and votes the opposite way, neatly canceling out the idiot's vote, thus freeing his time to work on Mr. Fusion, thus solving the energy problem, and retiring to some remote Polynesian island.

17. Blue collar with a dash of intellectualism, I guess.
Drive a domestic beater, like meat, bread, and cheese, wear leather, own guns, and stick to jeans and a short-sleeved button-down shirt whenevery possible. Cotton, preferably. My job is that strange, offbeat kind where I actually walk into a building and add value to raw materials like steel with tools and machinery. Weird, huh? Got my head in the clouds with my bookshelves full of medium-to-hardcore science-fiction, alternative history, light fantasy, and horror, with a dash of Star Trek for good measure. I tend to reread books and serieses I like, often until the covers fall off. When I drink, it's typically a Sam Adams, a MGD, or a Corona with lime. Don't like wine. Listen to Air America every day and piss off my conservative boss with podcasts of Thom Hartmann and Sam Seder. All CFB in my light fixtures and LED nightlights in my plugs, so I use less than 300 kWh of juice every month. I keep my hair trimmed short, never tried out facial hair, and am free of tattoos and piercings.

 A blue-collar liberal with enough smarts to tell that Reaganomics is a complete sham?

78. Now that I've got a little time to elaborate...
I've got long hair, usually scruffy facial hair and generally strike people as being some kind of hippie/grunge/rocker/whatever type, but I've never done drugs or smoked anything. Ever.

I'm poor, but I've only been on unemployment once (job went under with no warning thanks to an asshole boss who was stupid enough to run a pizza place near a college campus into the ground, and enough of an ass to lie to us and pretend everything was fine until the very end.) and welfare never.

I'm a college educated musician. (although I didn't graduate...)

Currently a college student again. (trying to fix that whole not graduating thing)

I like to drink wine and microbrew/imported beer.

I'm fairly artsy in general, although outside of music and a bit of a way with words I have little talent for such things.

I try to eat healthy, but I don't go so far as to be a vegetarian.

I drive a hybred... but it's not mine.

And I've got an IQ somewhere in the 145-150 range. But I don't like to tell people about it. :P

I recycle as much as I can, drink green tea that I brew myself with loose leaves, own Ikea furniture, shop at Trader Joe's, hate corporations unless they make stuff that I like, I skipped out on doing fun stuff so I could go and caucus for Obama, listen to Air America every day and MPR most days, and of course I post on DU like it's the driving force for my life.

I don't like coffee shops and am suspicious of organic food so there's hope for me yet.

I am also one of the whitest non-white people you'll ever meet as evidenced by this site: http://stuffwhitepeoplelike.wordpress.com/

68. Is there a stereotype for liberals who can't find a niche?
Cafeteria Catholic?
Effete Boston-Educated Technocrat?
Dispirited former anarchist?

A member of Bill Clinton's family (I'm not saying who) once told me I was "Administration ready." I still don't know what that means, but it's probably bad from a Freeper perspective.

I mean, really, have you seen all the French movies in my Netflix queue?

Aside from that, I've always supported my local PBS station, don't own a car, have had too many years of formal education, completely give myself away at the newsstand (i.e., checking out the copies of Washington Monthly, Sojourners, etc.), and would have gladly sent Ronald Reagan to federal prison for Iran-contra.

74. I think 'secular progressive' is broad enough to encompass most of it.
I'm not a big fan of stringing together adjectives, not only does the list get kinda long, but it reminds me of the generic composer/arranger method used to avoid learning how to write for percussion--just take three adjectives and put them together to describe the groove, the goofiest of which I've seen being "Afro Celtic Latin."

don't drink no lattes, take my coffee black and strong, like my wimmens.

Live in the suburbs, and like that too after many years of city living and aggravation.

like microbrews and decent wine and single-malt scotch, so that is the elitist snob liberal part of me.

shop at Trader Joes and Whole Foods, so I must be a liberal, I think.

No Birkenstocks. I do like tofu, actually, even though I am a carnivore. Most commercial granola is way too sweet for me.

I'm less liberal than my parents, being very much the pragmatist. I hate idiocy in any political persuasion, left, right or center.

90. I know people like to say they don't fit stereotypes, but I really don't.
My economic thinking is basically socialism-lite.

My social thinking is basically libertarian, except I would not hesitate to be aggressive if something really is a danger to society.

Should we impose serious restrictions on CO2 and other waste sources? Of course. Wanna marry your same sex partner? Sure, why not. Wanna marry your husband's girlfriend? Sure, why not? Wanna come from somewhere else and expect me to speak your language? No fucking way. Wanna impose religious values on the public? No fucking way. Wanna take guns away from civilians? Sorry, my hands are neither cold nor dead. We should also fund public media, all levels of education and have a single-payer universal health system. We should do away with deferential treatment of religious property and income in state and Federal tax laws. Maybe then local schools would be better funded. Antitrust laws need to specifically address media consolidation.

My house is lit with compact fluorescent bulbs. My family donates to environmental organizations, i.e. Chesapeake Bay Foundation and have memberships to the local zoo and aquarium. However, I never drink lattes, don't drive a Volvo or Prius, don't have an advanced degree, am not a vegetarian, don't buy groceries at Whole Foods, can't afford anything organic except what I grow in my small backyard plot, never watch PBS or listen to NPR. I drive a 13 year old Toyota Corolla, only have an AA degree, shop at cheap grocery stores such as Aldi and Save A Lot, and have two children in Catholic school. I know few people who fit the liberal sterotype and I found them to be total snobs.

I have been in the same profession for 22+ years, and I have helped over 100,000 total students, most of them very financially needy, at several different colleges and universities find ways to fund their education. :) (I figured out the numbers a while back, and even I was impressed. :D) I'm a bleeding-heart liberal with a firm footing in reality, if you really want to know the truth. :)

I'm also a strong advocate for both animal rights and human rights. :)
