Are horrible drivers ignorant about their selfishness
or are they "simply" unaware of their unacceptable failures behind the wheel?

I mean, I'm stuck behind someone tonight in the "fast lane" who was doing about 32 in a 45.

There was so much traffic, it took me forever to move in front of them.

As I looked over, the driver and front passenger were "busy" pointing at things out of the window and giggling. They seemingly didn't have a care in the world.

Please help me understand this mentality. Anyone?

I'm constantly thinking about the other drivers when I'm behind the wheel. When I do need to be on the phone on the freeway, I move all the way over to the slow lane because I know I'm not at my best behind the wheel.

And do I sometimes screw up when I drive? Of course, we all do.

But I'm talking about the usual suspect drivers.

And what's funny is there will be people who will read this and agree with me, yet they're the type of terrible driver I'm talking about!! lol

So, I like the times when I get to take the BART train.

Oh, but I have a lot of complaints about mass transit commuters as well! HA!

And do they ever steam clean the goddam cloth seats?! :wtf:

1. Some of them are just so bad that they aren't even capable of judging how bad they are.
And some are just assholes who don't think about other people.

Hard to tell which is which when you're not privy to their thoughts.

3. Sometimes inherent stupidity plays a role.
I mean, if you have 3 rearview mirrors and you can't figure out that the big line behind you is because of your slow ass, then that makes you either absent minded (which happens) or dumb as a box of hammers.

But yeah, most of it is selfishness. A huge peeve of mine.

7. You know, the dark side of me
used to want a brushbreaker on the front of my car. Firetrucks break trees down with 'em. I'd *push* folks outta the way with it.

Traffic: the biggest waste of time, energy and money on the planet. If it were up to me, the entire infrastructure would be Autobahn.

12. Or at least get out of the passing lane.
If you want to chat with someone PLEASE bear in mind you are still driving. The rules of the road are not suspended while you chat with your mother.

5. both?
I don't know really, but I know a lot of awful drivers who aren't otherwise horrible selfish people. My girlfriend is a god-awful driver with lots of tickets to prove it. We've gotten in so many fights about her driving, which she says is me being mean or knit-picking, but it's not!! When you're driving a car, you're responsible for the lives of your passengers and anyone else in a car on that road - along with being transport a car is also a 2 ton killing machine, and shouldn't be handled recklessly. I don't think people would do the things they do while driving if instead of driving it was holding an unlocked and loaded weapon..... "oh, I'm just going to put on lip gloss with one hand while I hold this UZI with the other."

I also know people who think that they're just great drivers who are terrible - I don't know what to say about them.

9. They are ignorant about their selfishness.
My favorites are the ones who fail to yield when entering a highway from an on-ramp. They just expect everyone to make room for them in heavy traffic traveling at 70 mph.

14. A mantra
Most people cannot think.
Most of the rest won't think.
Those few who do think don't do it very well.

16. Traffic in NorCal is HORRIFIC
I usually ride the Amtrak to work but had to drive this week.

I am not religious but beginning mid-week, I started to pray before I hit I-80. Monday was the craziest drive ever. I almost got hit by 2 cars on a 35 mile stretch of I-80 West (Rocklin to Davis). Speed limit is 65 mph and I am driving about 75 mph. Drivers are flying past me left and right. The bad thing is that I drive a small car (Toyota Corolla) and I am constantly bullied by huge SUVs if I don't move out of the way fast enough (e.g., I only drive 75 mph on a 65 mph highway). The worst thing is a SUV with badly adjusted lights. They blind the hell out of me.

And then, of course, there are those idiots who drive - for no apparent reason - 50 mph on the highway. WTF?
