Who loves/hates "What Not to Wear"? |
|
You know, the show that makes you throw out all of your existing clothes and tells you what to wear and why.
I have a strange fascination with it, but I only see when I go to my dtr's house. She and my granddaughters love it.
Here's their secret: alterations! Very few people can look automatically stunning in ready to wear clothes. Alterations are the key! However, it certainly adds to the cost of your wardrobe!

1. It irritates me how crappy they can be to some of their projects. |
|
Some of them didn't deserve the ridicule they receive over their wardrobes. They are a nasty couple those two...and sometimes I am not thrilled with what they come up with.

4. Love it. It amazes me how much people's attitudes can change when |
|
they look good and feel good about themselves because of it. It may seem shallow, but I don't think it is, really - so much of our self-esteem comes from what we see in the mirror, and whether or not we're happy with that image. What I love about it is that they pick people based on their wardrobe, not on their model-skinny potential or anything like that - just real people.

5. It's kind of addictive. |
|
I stumbled on it a while back but didn't start tuning in until fairly recently. As someone noted above, it is remarkable how people's confidence levels are boosted by a change in their look. What's best of all is that they encourage the women to dress the bodies they have, not the bodies they wish they had, and encourage them to choose colors and styles that flatter them. Most people need a little confidence, a little challenge, a little change in the routine, and WNTW does that.
And if Clinton and Stacey can be gratuitously nasty in their comments, they also make a point of complimenting their victims on their best features: nice eyes, tiny waist, etc. It doesn't matter if the women is a size 4 or a size 20, either; the idea is to for her to strut her stuff.
That said, I don't agree with all of the fashion decisions, and what's with the goofy terminology? It's a pair of trousers, not a trouser.

9. I think they only rip the candidates if they know the person can |
|
take it. "You look like split pea soup!" or whatever. The comments are usually about the horribleness of the clothes, but never, ever are they derogatory about the woman's body, and Clinton and Stacey do make a point of emphasizing the person's strong features all throughout the show. Though they are a bit too catty in the beginning, oftentimes.
The clothes transformation is interesting, but so is the appearance - get the bangs out of the eyes, do the roots, blot the shine off the forehead, even out skin tone a bit. Carmindy looks oddly artificial in her own makeup, but she usually does a really good job with the various women, not giving them more than they can handle or say they like to do. If the woman likes makeup, Carmindy will give her several options; if the woman just wants to get the hell out of the house, she'll give her a '5 minute face'.
But Nick - while he often makes the color and texture of the hair look better, he inevitably pulls out the frigging flat-iron and sizzles their hair into a straight, stringy sheet of hair just hanging off their heads. His styles - if he gets a woman with straight texture - often look all the same and like shit. His main contribution is color correction, NOT style. "Oh, you have a round/square/long/heart-shaped face? Great! Let me flat iron your hair into a long, straight style! It'll look great!"
