So I finally saw "The Queen" this weekend |
|
Damn, Helen Mirren knocked that role out of the ballpark, probably one of the best of her career.
I thought it was very well done, respectful of the fact that these people were playing parts of folks who were still alive and doing their same jobs.
BTW, I loved James Cromwell as Prince Philip.

4. God bless cheap BBC/PBS productions, I say... |
|
...they tend to be damn sight better than most American network crap.
I recall seeing an unwanted fly buzzing around and occasionally landing on the actors in a scene during "I, Claudius," I think it was. That would NEVER happen on a multi-million-dollar network show, but so what? "I, Claudius" was amazing.

6. I meant from a production value/look perspective |
|
not that I am really a fan either (love Curious George and Super Why though) but I meant from the way it was shot. It didn't look like a major motion picture to me.

19. It wasn't a major movie; the main production company was part of British TV |
|
Granada, which is part of the BBC's biggest competitor, ITV, and who make things like 'Prime Suspect'. See http://www.hollywoodreporter.com/hr/content_display/news/e3ia767a63ba2afa61b94908e362bd908d4

3. Helen Mirren was brilliant, I thought the movie second-rate |
|
It was especially hard to watch Tony Blair, knowing what a piece of shit he is now.

5. Seriously - I kept thinking "WHY AREN'T YOU TAKING YOUR OWN ADVICE NOW" |
|
Tony Blair had the makings to be a legendary PM and screwed that one over with being George Bush's lapdog

15. Tony Blair actually likes Bush. He agrees with him. |
|
There was always something of the neocon about Blair. He likes bombing people for their own good. Because he only ever wants to do good. Why can't people understand that? Still, no-one ever said being good was easy.
But seriously though, I could not disagree more about Blair. He never had the makings of a legendary PM. He was always a fraud and a phoney. I despised him right off the bat in 1994 when he became Labour leader. I knew he was going to be trouble.

I actually finished up around 3:30 and was able to get home by a little after 5, so that I could see my wife and daughter.

Another excellent performance.
And I think "The Queen" is one of Stephen Frears' best films.

sale. I loved it. Helen Mirren has been one of my most favorite actresses since I first saw her in a BBC production of "Cousin Bette" on Masterpiece Theater back in 1971. All the actors were great, and the interposing of real time news footage added to the feeling you were actually on spycam in Balmoral.
It was a slam dunk for her, that's for sure
I loved the scene where they are setting up the picnic and she turns to the corgies and says "Stay" and 4 little corgies just freeze in place. They were so cute.
