Book most frequently gotten rid of at used book stores? |
|
I think it might be Bill Clinton's My Life. I saw it 5 times in one store, 3 different sections. Sorry, Bill, its too long.

Geeze, what a tank job by an otherwise interesting, though barely literate, storyteller. It wasn't his politics that stopped me from reading, it was the death of his story. His hero by about book 6 had turned into the villain from book one, and the author didn't seem to even realize it.

It was such a great series at first! I got pissed when I realized he made the bad guys in one book thinly veiled Bill and Hillary Clinton.....and then basically villainizing all the anti-war people...ugh.:banghead:

It's a good thing my subconscious didn't allow me to get through the first book. I've heard absolute horrors about the directions it went. It says something that my crazy redneck ex LOVED those books.
Believe me, I tried to get through Book 1. But nothing will jar me out of a Ye Olde High Fantasye novel like a main character named...Richard.
I'm REALLY picky about names in my fantasy novels, what can I say?

There's a sad, sad, SAD (but huge) selection of psychobabble books from the seventies, feel-good vibes books for key-party-goers, instruction manuals on hooking up with people (light incense and give your man a lubricious massage with strongly-scented oil). Sexy cookbooks.

 All I happen to be doing is I happen to stroll past a shelf which happens to display these books turned outward/not spines, which happen to feature erotic ways to pour cereal/fix a pipe/clean the lint trap, on my way to the more profound books. You know, histories & books about words & whatnot. Oh, also-:loveya: :loveya: :loveya:

I like apocalyptic fiction, but that was just so poorly written and shallow I couldn't stand it.
Compared to The Stand, it was worse than a Jack Chick tract.

The most common title I come upon in thrift stores has to be What to Expect When You're Expecting. The most common authors I see are Danielle Steele, Tom Clancy, John Grisham, Jude Devereux and Kathleen Woodiwiss.

29. The real answer, if anybody cares, is the Bible. |
|
So much so that many used book stores will not accept them most of the time because they've already got 30-50 copies. I used to work in a used book store and I thought we got so many copies because we were near a catholic school.
I went on to work for a literacy organization and ran our book donation program...guess what the most donated book was. Shame was that we couldn't accept them (or any materials of a religious nature or bent.), so they went into the dumpster. I used to save the nicer ones and give them to Catholic Charities.

33. From George Orwell's "Burmese Days" |
|
The book-wallah was an itinerant peddler of books who wandered from station to station throughout Upper Burma. His system of exchange was that for any book in his bundle you gave him four annas, and any other book. Not quite ANY book, however, for the book-wallah, though analphabetic, had learned to recognize and refuse a Bible.
"No, sahib," he would say plaintively, "no. This book (he would turn it over disapprovingly in his flat brown hands) this book with a black cover and gold letters--this one I cannot take. I know not how it is, but all sahibs are offering me this book, and none are taking it. What can it be that is in this black book? Some evil, undoubtedly."
 :applause:
