4. Well, my composite score was 130, but my results were really uneven.
First of all, my verbal IQ was measured at 147 (on a scale that only went up to 150), whereas my non-verbal was only 105.

If that wasn't strange enough, my scores in individual areas were just ridiculous - ranging from higher than 99th percentile (genius) to lower than 1st percentile (impaired/retarded).

Unless you're penciling out new maths on napkins or something.

IQ tests on young kids are notoriously inaccurate, as are most of the Internet tests you see today.

Edited on Fri Mar-21-08 04:39 PM by Breeze54
back then is very different from the way they do it now. They used high numbers back then for scores. I was also tested 3 times for reading level in 3rd grade (because they didn't believe the results) and was reading at 2nd year college level. I know I'm not as smart as Einstein! But that is the number I kept being told when I didn't 'perform' at an acceptable level in school. They never let me alone after that test. On my back all the time!! It sucked!!

47. History of Intelligence Testing
History of Intelligence Testing

http://www.iqtest.com/history.html

snip--->

Instead of giving a person’s performance on the Stanford-Binet as a mental age, Terman converted performance into a single score, which he called the intelligence quotient, or IQ. A quotient is the number that results from dividing one number by another. The idea of an intelligence quotient was first suggested by German psychologist, William Stern, in 1912. To compute IQ, Stern divided mental age by the actual, chronological age of the person taking the test and then multiplied by 100 to get rid of the decimal point. So, a child who was eight years old and answered the test questions as well as a twelve-year-old scored an intelligence quotient of 12/8 x 100, or 150. A twelve-year-old who answered the test questions as well as an average eight-year-old would have an IQ of 8/12 x 100, or 66.

This formula works well for comparing children, but since intelligence levels off in adulthood, it is not appropriate for adults. A thirty-year-old who answers questions as well as an average twenty-year-old would have an IQ of only 20/30 x 100, or 66.

So intelligence tests today no longer use the IQ formula. Instead, the score on a modern intelligence test compares a person’s performance with others his/her own age, while arbitrarily defining the average score as 100. By convention, most people still use the term IQ to refer to a score on an intelligence test.

-----------

So I very well could have scored 159 at that time. ;)

20. Somewhere between 137 and 150
According to a million different tests I've done. I remember in high school (oh, so long ago!) that one of our teachers (who couldn't reveal the results) looked me in the eyes when he proclaimed that some of the results were surprising, that some people were higher than he thought. I had a very bad tendency to never do my homework way back then, and I guess I was your typical underachiever. An early geek, if you will.

38. Seriously? 137
Which makes me smart, but not genius smart :) The generally accepted cutoff for "Genius" is anything above 140.

I haven't have a test in many years though, so I don't know how accurate that number is anymore. Scores tend to fall slightly with age as our mental acuity declines. Even at the ripe young age of 33 my mental response times and ability to recollect are probably slower than they were at 22, when I was tested.

44. Try two standard deviations above normal.
If normal is 100, one standard deviation is 15 points. Mensa's cutoff at the top 2% of the population is at 130. There are also high IQ societies that are more selective.

There is one called the Triple 9 Society, which is for people that score three standard deviations above normal, or 145. That's one out of a thousand people, I believe.

I have a client who was accepted into Mensa, but he still can't figure out how to find a file on his hard drive. He's about as tunnel-visioned as it's possible to get and still have eyes that work. So you can be an extremely intelligent idiot for all that, or you can be an average person who still gets it right every time.

73. Don't know....
but my kids were smart enough to get academic full rides to very good schools and each graduated in 4 years with ZERO debt. One in grad school, the other is a newly hired auditor for a fortune 500. So there. Its not what you know, but what you do with what you got.

98. Ha ha yup, or else if you score high they lower the score,

...and then play upon your insecurity/ego (Oh my GOD! My IQ is slipping!1!) and try to sell you their "Improve Your IQ!" books/tapes/whathaveyou.

79. Most of the tests I take end up putting me around 145.
I don't think I've ever gotten a score lower than 140 or higher than 150.

80. I am intelligent enough to know that IQ is a nonsensical metric.
Edited on Fri Mar-21-08 08:16 PM by NNadir
I wrote about this rather bizarre notion that a single number can represent intelligence elsewhere: http://www.dailykos.com/story/2007/12/11/19320/331/992/420040

My note was merely a referent to the far more cutting and brilliant discussion of the subject of IQ racism by Stephen J. Gould.

A quarter of a century ago Gould made arguments that were, in my view, irrefutable, that basically offered that the concept of IQ was just another element of public mythologizing that was, at best, silly and at worst, criminally pernicious.

In general I know a fool when he or she either asks me what my IQ is, or worse, blurts out his or her own IQ.

90. To quote from an online comic I read...
when a character finds out that his girlfriend thinks smart is sexy, his immediate response is, "Hey, my brain is hung like a horse!"

84. 150s. I always score in the mid 150s.
When I took an IQ test in high school, I got called into the guidance counselor's office and scolded because I was in the "low genius range" and my grades weren't "low genius" kinds of grades. I stopped caring about my IQ right about then.

101. I haven't taken an IQ test in years, and I'm not really sure I want to know what it is
In fourth grade, I scored a 150 on the IQ test I took. Four years later whenever I took the test in eighth grade it had fallen to 118. Maybe it was a bad day or something, but I dunno... I'm still not sure I'd want to take another IQ test. Who knows how much lower it may have fallen?!

106. Between 10 and 216.54782.
More seriously between 116 to 160 on a few "interweb" tests...I'm not so certain about the accuracy of these tests...

Actually I think most are full of themselves or aimed at people who are.
